How does vacation work for newhires. Is it prorated in some way or do you have to have a full year of service to be able to bid on it? Just curious. The contract sort of confused me.

It's pro-rated. The vacation year goes from July 1 to June 30. A full year would get you 14 days of vacation. If you were hired in mid-October, for example, you'd get a pro-rated vacation of 10 days (one full 7-day vacation, and one partial vacation of 3 days, subtracted from the work tour that it touches).

A pilot hired last October, however, wouldn't actually be able to take vacation until the following vacation year beginning on July 1. (You have to earn it before you can take it, but you'll be able to take the partial vacation time that you earn in that first year with the company.)

(As part of our new contract, we're in the process of moving the vacation year to begin October 1.)
