Hi, I'm Jay. :)

I was wondering if this board is only for pilots, or if anyone is allowed to post. I'm not a pilot but I want to become one. I will begin flight training as soon as I can find a good school.

Is there a specific area for non-pilots to post?

Should we say it now for Bobbysamd? "Don't PFT, Don't PFT, Don't PFT, Don't PFT, Don't PFT, Don't PFT, Don't PFT, Don't PFT, Don't PFT........ Do it the way we did, walking uphill to the flightline, in the snow, against the wind, before dawn, etc, etc, etc,...... :)

OH NO

You certainly dont have to be a current pilot to participate here. In fact, Honest questions will get you a wealth of good advice....no matter what you are in it for (training, career, etc..). Pilots are like a proud bunch who are eager to share thier experiences.

Now, just be careful diving into the hot threads (PFT, "I will do it for free", "I just love to fly so thats what matters", ) etc..etc..

Welcome, there is a lot of good experience here, but if ya get outta line, you are bound to get slapped...

As you get up the road with your training, make sure you can get your CFI in a Cessna Caravan. It's robust, economical and has benign spin characteristics...and chicks really dig Caravan pilots.
 
I don't think I want to be a CFI. I'm not interested in instructing, I'm interested in flying. I hope to go on to a career with the majors.

Well, you better hop to it. You'll be quite marketable over at the banner towing place in 6 to 9 months. For a fee. Two to three years of that, and you'll be ripe for the hiring over at some traffic watch outfit. Nine months to a year of that, plus a year or so of 135 mutli engine flying and you'll be able throw a resume in over by us to fly freight Caravans and they will put your resume in the pile of 600, they got in the few hours after they announced open positions.

OHHHHHH Geeez here we go,

Welcome aboard Jay, wether you know it or not you just opened up a can of worms. You're going to hear from all these yahoos about getting your CFI and instructing, paying your dues, etc. etc. etc.

Then somebody will bring up PFT. Then the Mesa contract will be talked about because all the Mesa guys might of well Paid For Training with such a cruddy contract. Then a RJDC guy will bring up why everyone needs to get onboard with the lawsuit.

on and on and on..........but it is all fun.

What's the avg age of the Caravan pilots? Aren't 30-40% of them due to retire in the next 5 years!? :rolleyes::D

Serious advice for you here, Jay... It took me years to realize this, but it isn't what you know, it's who you know. Whether at work (flying or not), building a plane, buying a plane, maintaining a plane or just flying one - 95% of your battles can be beat or avoided by learning things from others. Bottom line - yes, hang out here pilot or not. Put on your Nomex, be humble, axe questions and be a little skeptical (sp?) of things you read. You'll eventually be able to filter most of the BS from good answers, and it will help you immensely in the long run.

As far as instructing goes, like it or not, it's one of the stepping stones for 95% of civilian pilots who go to the airlines. There just aren't many jobs out there for 250 hour pilots.

Instructing is the best way to build time quickly as a new commercial pilot. If you have lots of money you can always buy an airplane and pay for all of your flight time. BTW entry level jobs flying boxes in a twin require a minimum of 1200 hours.

If you decide to make this a career, make sure you are not doing it for the money. Do it because you love to fly. It will take many years to where you can make a comfortable living.

I'm just a GA pilot and have only my CFI and I fly for fun; basically I fly my friends to KLAS for the weekend, do sight seeing trips, or just to get out away from everybody else. In other words you don't have to be a pilot or professional pilot for that matter to post here.

I love this board because it is great community of pilots, with great stories and has a wealth of information. One board topic you have to read from start to finish is the YGBSM...(You've Got To Be Spoofing Me)! topic. and I try to stay away from the PFT threads :)

I wish you luck on your endeavors, I will now go back to lurking.

I don't care about the money, I would fly for nothing. I love flying, and that's why I want to pursue it as a career. I don't think I would be very good at instructing, because it is a job that requires a lot of talking, and talking is not something I'm good at(I can't pronounce r's, I'm not insane. A little crazy, but not insane). I don't believe in the whole 'paying dues' thing. There are other ways to build time besides instructing, and there are low-time flying jobs out there.
 
A Bueller is a guy that drives one of those harley engined cafe racer bikes made by Buell. Get yourself a Ducati or something, and they will quit picking on you for being a Bueller.
