I don't care about the money, I would fly for nothing. I love flying, and that's why I want to pursue it as a career. I don't think I would be very good at instructing, because it is a job that requires a lot of talking, and talking is not something I'm good at(I can't pronounce r's, I'm not insane. A little crazy, but not insane). I don't believe in the whole 'paying dues' thing. There are other ways to build time besides instructing, and there are low-time flying jobs out there.

Lemme guess...

1. based on your youthful, idealistic impressions of the professional flying, I'd say you're about... 16, and/or

2. not being a good talker isn't a very good objection against being a cfi. Unless you have some kind of serious, debilitating communications thing, you could manage with moderate speaking skills, and/or

3. Everything I've written is a waste of my time since you're just baiting for some flame.

I'm amazed, and appreciative, at how many people plug my posts. In that regard, Dick Gregory wrote a book and used a common racial pejorative as its title. You know what that pejorative is and I know what it is. Mr. Gregory said he gave his book that title because every time someone used the word his book received a plug! So, I appreciate the promos!

I also remember that while I was in broadcasting there was talk show host whom a lot of people didn't like. They always said, "I cannot stand Mr. **** and his right-wing opinions. I hate him and his program. I wouldn't dare miss his show!"

In any event, welcome to the board. I would only suggest that you study the business thoroughly, receive career counseling, and talk to pilots. Ask them how they reached their career goals. Do all that before you flat-out declare that you do not want to instruct.

Finally, do not say that you would fly for free. You deserve proper pay, as do all pilots. You also deserve respect from your employer(s), as do all pilots. Settle for nothing less.

Do you think that once you get your commercial you can just walk into American and tell them that you love flying and want to sit left seat on a 777, or maybe you will be flexiable and agree to be F/O for a few months. Of course you will tell them that you are happy to do the job for free.
Listen you have to put in your dues because every job that you try to get into in civilian aviation has a perspective boss who put in his or her dues, they want to see the same out of their future employees.
One last thing Jay, you do know that you have to be at least 17 to get a pilots liscense right?

I don't know if you checked my profile, but I will be 19 next month. No, I don't think I can just walk on to an airline job with a Comm. license and 80 hours of flight time, but there are other ways to buid time besides instructing for close to nothing or towing banners in northern Manitoba. There ARE companies that hire low-time pilots, and there are airlines that will pay for your training. Sure, I would love to get paid, but I don't fly for the money. If all I cared about is the money, then I wouldn't be flying, I would go into accounting or something.

I don't know why, but everyboday hates me here! I only have three posts, and I have already been cursed out, insulted, and degraded. I am NOT a troll, I'm not looking for a fight, but I will not be treated like this!

It's nice that you are doing this for the love of flying, it will surely make training more bearable.

Not instructing because you can't pronounce rs is silly. I had an instructor who stuttered. It took some time to get used to it, but I loved him for trying so hard, and I worked twice as hard to show him he was a good instructor. He loved flying so much he overcame his limitations and set out to share the love of flying with others. Great networking opportunities as an instructor too. You never know who's son/daughter you'll teach, or who you'll give a BFR/IPC to.

Flying for free sounds like a great marketing tool now, but as you step into the real world, where you have to work to earn a living (unless mom and dad are loaded) you will quickly learn the fly for free slogan was nothing more than your naiveness.

There are non-instructing jobs out there, but there are also too many pilots who are looking for those, besides who's gonna be willing to attest to your flying skills in a letter of rec???

I am not too far in my career, but these are things I have learned from personal experience or as tales from experienced pilots. If you can afford to pay for your flight time, great, but you cannot buy experience.

You obviously don't understand that it is people like you, who are willing to fly for free (editorial on my part, not necessicarily intended to be a statement of your exact postition), that bring down working conditions and wages for the rest of us. Of course if you are just flaming, you already know this. If not, you need to think about the longterm consequences of flying for love, not money.

If you just love to fly, then get your CPA and buy yourself a 172. Don't drag the rest of us down with your romanticism.
