I am pleased to announce that Capt. B.S. has been selected as assistant chief pilot at our Atlanta station effective Aug. 1, 2007. B., a 10-year ASA pilot, will replace Capt. F.L. who recently decided to step down from his chief pilot position.​
B. has held several positions of increasing responsibility at ASA, but first joined our team in 1997 as a first officer on the Brasillia and CRJ. Two years later, he joined the training department as a CRJ instructor and then served as a line check airman and check pilot on the CRJ. B. has also served as the manager of Pilot Training, assistant program manager on the CRJ and became the first Methods and Standards Representative (MSR) for the Flight Operations group.​
B.’s strong range of experience at ASA within the Flight Operations group will no doubt be an asset as he takes on his newest role.​

First off, it's too bad Fred won't be in the office anymore. Sure he was getting more grumpy, but he was always a quality guy.

As for the rest, not good for ASA pilots. B.S. is a nice guy, but 100% company. In his 10 years at ASA, only 2 were as a line pilot(just like most of the rest of management) and none as a Captain. Well, maybe a month or two, I'm not sure. In any case, I've seen him work in his role as MSR. I wouldn't expect a lot of support for the pilot group coming from his office. The fact that he was appointed without position notice put out by the company tells you what their motives are.
 
You got it....lets give him a chance. He couldn't be worse than some of the other chief pilots we have had.

No kidding. Company guy or not, after the circus show we've had in the past few years he is welcome. Anything is better than giving 3 goofy administrative assistants the title "chief pilot".
 
Well as stated above we should give him a chance, but... Every time someone who never even goes near flying the line get put in a CP position, they suck because they don't have a feel for what a line pilot actually goes through.
Someone said that there was no position notice for this and I agree that says alot. We'll see...
 
Being a CP is probably what lead to FL's health problems and grumpiness. You not only have to put up with management BS but unfortunately there is a lot of stupid pilot BS they have to put up with as well. Sometimes it's a lose/lose situation for a CP between the pilot in question and management. I'm not saying we pilots don't have ligitament issues, but occasionally there is some inexcusable stuff that happens and usually they are the ones who cry the loudest about the CP's being worthless. FL was a good one.
 
I'm sorry, but BS is no friend of the line pilot. I recall him coming into recurrent under the guise of explaining the new "briefing form" he created, and launching into a tirade about how line pilots are stupid.

I see abuse of power on the level of CV coming. Beware! We lost the only friend we had left in the CPO.

Look at the children he has to put up with sometimes. FO's sticking their tongues out at Check Airmen, people answering their phone in the sim, trying to land on unusable runways at AGS with a FED on board,........the list goes on and on.

If you go in their like a man, instead of a sniveling, whining 8 year old, he would treat you as such.

FL is absolutely one of the good guys. He will be greatly missed in the CP's office.

I wouldn't call FL "grumpy". I would call him "overstressed", "overworked", and "unappreciated".

Yea, in today's entitlement society, if it isn't "come on in, sit down, can I get you a hot cocoa?" Then it is seen as grumpy. All those adjectives fit FL perfectly. Many times I just say hello to him, and he would say "tell those guys there isn't a line in front of CC's office." Overworked, and under appreciated.

Now, MJC is in FL's old orafice, where will they put BS? In the suntaning room that doubles as a sh1tter?

Hell fire, I'd be grumpy to if they just cut my chest open. If that happened to most of the people in the GO, there would be an animal come out like in the movie "The Thing".

FL was, and is, one of the best guys to ever manage an aviation operation. He found ways to get things done, fix problems, protect pilots and keep guys from walking off the job at an outstation. The fact he did his job with intelligence and diplomacy resulted in most not seeing the drama that being the bridge between the ASA pilots and the G.O. involves.

Is FL going to be OK? If he retires for any reason somebody let those of us who have moved on know - so that we can contribute to whatever nice thing the pilots get together and do for him.

Some people have a hard time reading apparently. As you'll see above, I said FL was a quality guy. I was just noting that, as others have said, with the QOL going downhill for us, the QOL has gone down for him too and I'm sure that's a big factor in his health problems, just like it was for RC a few years ago.

Anyway, the point of the post is that BS is not going to be a positive for the pilot group. As I said, I've dealt with him in company business at the G.O. and I came away from it with this impression:

He doesn't like line pilots. He finds them a nuisance and thinks he's smarter than them.

I'm just always skeptical of anyone being CP on who's resume "pilot" is the smallest segment of experience.

From what I understand, Fred'll be fine. His resignation letter stated (not 100%, but close), "After an unplanned 5 day vacation in Piedmont Hospital, a helicopter ride, and lots of morphine, my doctor has advised me to reduce as much stress as possible. For these reasons, and others, I've decided to resign my position as Assist. Chief Pilot and pursue a career in the training department."

He's sitting in a sim dealing with new hires and a bunch of old friends instead of the downhill flow from the "Puzzle Palace".

I think he'll be just fine.........:beer:

Lets give Brad a chance. Remember when CT went off on the line pilots "I'm tired of hearing how the dam line pilots carry this place" Brad was the one who stood up for us.

Brad is a good person, and I think he will do a good job.

My question is, why would he take the position?? It has to be the worst job at the company. No appreciation from the pilot group, and you have to have management breathing down your back all the time. It always has struck me as the "assistant principal" job of the airline industry. All you see is discipline and problems all day long.

More power to him!
 
He reminds me of the guy from the 'natural enhancement' commercials, you know,. smiling big and wide and with the half wave/salute thing,.. Defenitely a poster boy for management.

Fred on the other hand, was/is awesome. Ive never seen him grumpy...

He probably didn't want to take it, he was "assigned" it by the rest of FLT OPS management so they'd have one of their own in place. Why would he want to leave the air-conditioned comfort of the big gray box to come "slum it" over at the airport with the rest of us?

You might think he'll do a good job, but this whole thing smells bad...

Goodbye and good luck to one of the very best people we have ever had. We love ya Fred! Sure will be missed!
Brad is a total suckup-to to the extreme. I remember him from when he was an F.O. teaching systems. Not a good guy, not the type to ever stand up for any line guys. An embarassing suckup and I expect he will be a jackass as a CP. We don't have much over there anymore we can count on... There is pretty much no one over there I will go to anymore-just avoid that office at all costs-maybe Bob, but absolutely none of the others!

give him a chance - he is a good guy and i think will do a good job. fred is tough to replace. bs taught my groundschool on the 200 about 8 years ago and was a great teacher. he just did my recurrent 3 months ago and it was the most fun one i have ever had, didnt seem pro management at all. dont know anyone who had anything bad to say about him.
