Funny thing about the Irish in America. At one time the Irish were the ones on the recieving end of the discrimination billy club. Somewhere I have a sign that used to be seen all over Boston and the surrounding area "Irish Need Not Apply".

Then we set the guinness down for a min. got elected and started using the iron heel on someone else.

Even on the Simpsons, The very first Scratch Movie(or was it Itchy)

"Scratchy is beset by the Irish"

Millhouse Screams "Look out!! there is an irishman."

Now We have St. Patrick's( c.385-461) Day

Even at Bennigan's they used to have the Paddy Salad.

Never heard of the Sp** Rice and Beans
or
Limey Boiled whatever they eat.

But you never hear the Irish complain. Well very much anyway.

Ohh How could one forget the Paddy-Wagon =)

I'm a native American because i was born in America. That makes me native to this country. The indians just whine about everything. They wanted UND to get rid of fighting sioux as a nickname. And the liberal school newspaper agreed of course. Thankfully the whole school is in favour of keeping the name, because it sounds a heck of a lot better than the skating angels or something gay like that.

Why aren't Norwegians all pissed off about being the Minnesota Vikings mascot?

On a related tangent. Anybody know if the Mescaleros still have their special "Apache"? I'd heard about it, but didn't quite believe it until I saw it; a Piper Cheyenne with all the original insigia removed and "Apache" on the cowlings. Been years though....

They have a Lear 35 last I saw.

And the "fighting whiteys" was not for real mascot, it was a native trying to make a statement, thinking whites would get offended. It kinda backfired, everyone wanted to buy the shirts he was selliing.

My ancestors were Pirates, and I'm rather offended by the bad rap they get, too. It's because of all this revisionist history and sports mascots that they are wrong construed as murdering savages. Everyone forgets that they were kind of like the original Coast Guard- sailing around, drinking, and confiscating.

Illini is short for Illinois. I guess we'll have to change the state name as well. (I may have to censor my name!!)

If anything, a respected symbol shouldn't be an issue...why don't these people go after the Cleveland Indians logo...a big smiling redskin! It doesn't get anymore blatant than that.

Seriously folks......The PC crowd made my old junior high change it's name from Red Devils because some of the kiddies might fall under the spell of satan or some crap like that....
Next time someone tries to correct you in the name of PC....smack em upside the head and then let em whine....

Of all the problems in the world, there is no shortage of people whining and crying about meaningless issues. Apparently, it is not politically correct to name something after a Native American tribe. A few years ago, Jeep took some heat because their SUV, the Jeep Cherokee, had been named that way for over a decade. Now, mascots for sports teams are even being revised. Even the US government is getting criticism because we have helicopters named "BlackHawk" and "Apache".

So, how long until these airplanes will require new names???

Cherokee
Seneca
Comanche
Seminole
Aztec....oh yeah that was a south American tribe...

They don't want this because the names could hurt the image of the casinos. Perhaps we should argue things like national defense, education services and scholarships, along with public services being offered to someone who pays no taxes yet gets tax payer benifits. Representation without taxation.

I think Native Americans have some good points here. i.e. "redskin" and "nigger" have very similar dictionary definitions.

Do you think that a team called the New York Jew Boys would ever exist? And the cheerleaders or fans doing "The Money Count". This is no different than say, The Atlanta Braves and the "Tomahawk Chop"

Many sports organizations with Indian mascots often use something to the effect of; "The Chiefs are going to scalp the Broncos!" This is an example of how the masses get their education from pop culture. Scalping originated in Europe and was taught to Indians. Yep, draft dodger John Wayne fought those Indian "savages".

It's not about honoring or being a tribute. It's trivialization of an entire culture for commercialization and games. A culture effectively defeated by murder, torture, rape, genocide, exploitation, upon all of which this country was built.

It's not the most important issue but, we can do without racist mascots.
