Planning on moving to the Jacksonville area this summer.
What is the best approach for finding work (CFI Job) down there before I move, to ensure work?
Hunt for a list of FBO's in the area, send resumes to them?

Any tips?

do some searching here on this board, most Fl responses were pretty dismall, althogh this may be all over....
most have said the operators in FL are pretty scary and they are fat on pilots down there...
at least its warm!

Try over at Craig Airport. They have a number of flight schools there. Also hit St. Augustine. They do quite a bit of instruction there as well.

True, Alaska would be great, however, no mountain time, bush time, float time, ALASKA time can be a real tough hurdle to get over.

Try to get the instructor exams correct! If you continue to take the wrong exams few will have confidence in you. You should know better!

Thanks for the Alaska tip.

As for exams, they are knowledge tests, shame on you. As for the lady entering the data for the knowledge test, and me neglecting to properly review it, giving an AGI instead of the FI knowledge test, it only gave me another thing to put on my resume, and AGI. You make a mistake, learn from it, and move on. Bevis, you either a) never made mistakes in life or b) never learned from them.

So all in all it worked out fine.

Now that is great training for Alaska, make sure you have the right mountain pass before you proceed. And don't believe the person in front of you or around you know it yourself.I didn't realize you had just gotten your instructor a thousand hours of instruction them you'll be ready for Alaska.:D

Hey Gizbug,

Have you tried U of M flyers in AnnArbor?

They have a good set up and their CFIs are contractors. That means more $$$ for you.

I am sure they are maxed out with CFIs too, but still worth checking out.

From what I know of the Area in Jacksonville it's a good choice. There are many airports and you will find a CFI job quickley there. Since Jacksonville is close to Georgia you will find it nice to be able to get good prices on gas and enjoy flying year round.

But it does sometimes gets cold there too. In the South Florida area there are allot of flight schools and they are always have a pretty good turnaround in the CFI. Due to many students and instructors come to SFLA to get time and rating then move on.

Good luck and if you can it might be better to take a trip to the area your going and check with the schools. AOPA has a large listing of them that you can call ahead and talk to them first.

Hey Gizbug

How was thw wx today?

Did you get your ride in?

What about CFII and MEI? are you going to finish them before you head down?

Hey Gizzer, look over in Fernandina Beach(55J), just to the north of JAX, about 30-45 min from JAX.

There is a couple of flying clubs, and alot of really good people up there, give it some serious thought.

Any specifics, PM me.

Good luck.

I got my first instructing job in Daytona on Sept. 10th 2001. I got EXTREMELY lucky because I was hired when I brought my resume to the company. I was at the right place at the right time. After working there for 9 months I took a job (which is my current job) instructing in the Northeast. The pay is better but, the weather does not always cooperate. I had many of my friends try to get jobs in FL and you definately have know someone within the company to get a job. They are so swamped with resumes that most of the mail in's will probably get tossed. That's my 2 cents.
