Anybody have a checkride with Mark Boss? I did my ATP with him.

The only two checkrides I did out there were with Greg Lewis. Later on, I worked with him briefly at Van Nuys Flight Center.

I used to drag my POS C130 out there to make sure the new copilots could handle SOCAL. We'd do just one LDA and then stop mucking up the works for everyone else .... sorry to trash out the pattern but it was the closest thing to combat available .....

I had Mark Boss for my CFI instructor when he worked at Walen's. He left right before my checkride. Later, I took a CFI re-instatement ride with him. I sent a few students to him and they all said he was fair.

I forgot - I also did my commercial and instrument writtens at American Flyers.

Eagle-ista,

I flew at Bud Walens at the same time you did. I knew Bud and Bill Walen, Blossom, Zack, Greg Lewis, Mark Boss. I flew everything from a Tomohawk to BBJ out of VNY. Really like to know who you are. PM me.

I miss flying out of VNY. My dad instructed there in the early to mid 1970's. He taught his dad to fly there during that time and kept his CFI current as I was growing up. I eventually did all my ratings with him in VNY from 92-95. I miss the plentiful Citabrias at San Val, the Super Decathlons at Flightworks and formation flying with J.S.. I don't miss the 16L traffic pattern extending to Devonshire or Rinaldi on the weekends. Obviously a much different airport these days! Adam Berg once told me he was the "best pilot in the world" during a practical test. What a character! Anybody know if he is still around?

Nice trailer indeed. I'm just to flipn' broke to buy the DVD right now. Could anyone send me a copy and some foodstamps?

Hmmm, if you're still at VNY, do you qualify for the alumni association? Mark Boss and Adam Berg are still here, same with Greg Lewis and 'Tower Phil'.

The pattern extends to the foothills on both sides most weekends, but the Citabrias and Luscombes have been replaced by new Cessnas and Cirri. More 737s (BBJs) are moving in every month, but VNY remains non-airline.

The ANG ramp, along with a bunch of other buildings are in progress, probably the same progress they've not been making for 20 years. I've been here 5 and haven't seen much of a change; maybe next decade.

Fly SAFE!

Wow, Lot's of memories. Let's see... I did my instrument rating with Mark Boss and commercial license with adam b. I still see his caddy around the field. the intersection adam is talking about is ADAMM, on v186 just past elmoo intersection. did anyone ever hear the story about how adam b. invented the HSI indicator???

BUDDE intersection, also the MM on the BUR ILS 8, is named after Bud Walen.

Bud has been rumored to have walked into the FSDO to renew his CFI, he took an empty logbook, wrote 10,000 hours, 5,000 instuction given, and 10 of 10 in the last year passed on the first ride.

It was renewed on the spot.

He was also given a square inch of land at the distillery of Jack Daniels. Apparently word got back to them about how much whiskey he used to drink...

Does the bar on Sherman Way, just west of Havenhurst, still have all the photographs on the wall? There were lots of Bud Walen pictures, Flight 1, Green Hornets, and old T-6 stuff as well.

I have fond memories of Bud Walen and the gang, especially Bud. I remember a few things Bud told me that I live by today. “You can’t teach judgment kid”, “and never trust a man that doesn’t drink.” Oh and never talk airspeed with a primary student; Bud would hit the ceiling if you did. He was a great character to have learned from.

I want to go and see the bar across the street on Sherman Way if there are any pics of Bud, I miss that guy.

I hope Bud gets mentioned in the movie, he was a big part of VNY for many years. I know he taught a lot of Hollywood movie actors to fly.
Bud showed me the deed to the 1 inch square of land from Jack Daniels in TN, and I'm glad to her about Budde intersection, thats cool.

Hey any former fuelers from Skytrails here? Pat, Orlando? How about Petersen line guys? John?

Did a little drinking at the "pilots table" over at SkyTrails. How many here know that Bud Walen was a trumpet player in one of the big bands during and after WWll? Great guy!

I don't remember the details about Bud's trumpet playing days but I do remember him saying he played at a Vaudeville type show and smoked a little tea in the day. I do remember some of the stories of him teaching WWII cadets to fly in PT-17s. Great guy!

The cool thing about BUDDE intersection, is that its about 100 yards away from where the flight school used to be. If you drive into the parking lot of the office buildings just south of Sherman Way on Hayvenhurst (I forget the name of the building, but it's where Stel and Chrysler Aviation had their offices), you can see the antenna that identifies the MM on BUR ILS 8

When were you a refueler at SkyTrails? I worked in the office there during college to help pay bills. I think it was in 1990 or 1991.

Was there an FBO at VNY called Sky Trails? The only Sky Trails that I recall was the resturant on Sherman Way and Havenhurst. The owner Elmer Tarver died sometime in the late seventies or early 80's. Funny thing happened after he passed on. The resturant started making alot more money according to his wife. Seems like Elmer was skimming the books and showing a smaller profit while he was living without the wife knowing about it. He was a nice guy who extended credit for food and drink to a lot of guys who were just eaking out an existance instructing or doing whatever one did in those days.

There was more than one accident when a local pilot would leave the bar at the Trails and go directly to his airplane. Proving once again that flying and the bottle do not mix.

Does anyone recall the name Quentin Sondegaard. (sp). He was also a B movie actor that instructed for a long time up at the old Skyways on Roscoe Blvd. Always wonderd what happened to that guy. Any woment students were fair game and the dual cross country was always the point of no return with him.
