I seemed to remember hearing that in the Buddy Holly crash, that the artificial horizon was either caged or inoperative at the time. Not sure how the autopilot worked on that aircraft, but it may have not worked in that condition.

Or if it did work, it did not work well.

I would assume you could say that same for JFK Jr. as well.
