Is it wrong for someone who is not a minority to join OBAP and put it on a resume in hopes of scoring an interview? Has anyone tried this before?

Now this is an original idea!

I suppose that joining the OWRAP (Organization of White Redneck Airline Pilots) would be just as career enhancing?

Go minority...Try Norwegian American....0,00421%

Hey, why not...?

A good friend of mine changed his name from a good old "white" US male name to a hispanic name, then applied to Northwest, and got hired...When they asked him about the name-change he explained that his parents were missionaries in Panama and since he grew up there, he felt closer to the latin culture and changed his first and last name....

The system is in place, use the system.

It sure worked for him
Whatever it takes, lie, cheat and steal, everybody else does, just get on that seniority list..Even after the 9/11 and the pay-cuts he is still getting $101.00 per hour for sitting in the right seat of a DC-9 a few days a month.

the short answer is no its not wrong. We have members that are not black, and they are all welcome and treated like any other member. But if you are joining only to show up at convention time and drop off some resume's and not participate and support in any of the other volounteer events like ACE camps or Pilots in schools, that is certianly frowned upon by all members. Hope to see you at the convention in Phoenix next year.

He ACTUALLY changed his name? Or just on the resume?

He actually did change the name..First and last...

Yup, it worked....I would probably do the same if I could cook up a similar good explanation.

To pass all them interviews and exams and all that, ya have to be a good actor.
Don't tell 'em what ya think, tell 'em what they would like to hear.
That is why ya got all the prep-classes and books and briefings out there.
Say it loud and clear so it will ring the corporate bell...

Nevertheless, they can tell if ya B/S 100%, try to be honest most of the time, but a name-change to Hispanic and some crying story probably won't hurt...

Perfectly put.

Another side of the coin.....a lot of minorities......more than you suspect....feel like they have to be a lot better than average so no one gets the idea they got our job only due to being able to check some minority box on an application. For what it's worth I check the white box since I look white and live white and have never had the disadvantages that many other people like me have had. Changing your name or misusing membership in a fine organization like the black pilots group to get some advantage not due you is being a schmuck and is wrong. WC (1/4 Native American)

Since you didn't really get the REAL answer to your question I will give you the real!!! As a member I can tell you that your race plays very little in your being a member. We have many non minority members!!!

WD.

There was a pilot in my squadron that had a sex change operation. I think "she" works for american.

Maybe my question should have been.....have any people that are not minorities but members of OBAP gotten an interview after joining?

Yeah, we had one or two AA guys/gals doing that...So did SWA.

Not sure what the background or motivation was...Perhaps a Squadron thing..?..:D Don't be shy, just admit it and come out of the closet...It is safe out here..

FN FAL:

Jeez man,. yer pic and Avatar sure have changed.

You look like James Bond with a bad shave and a bad haircut.

Is "she" hot?

Nah, but try it out for free.

Actually no. My parents and grandparents on both sides were pretty progressive for their times. Consequently, like many Americans, I'm a mix of a lot of races. To get back on topic.....misusing membership in an organization or changing your name to something sterotypical of a minority to get some hiring advantage is wrong.
