Mexican Uncontrolled traffic pattern rules

We were wondering just what the uncontrolled traffic rules are for Mexican airports. We are going to MMSC (San Cristobal) airport for a visit. Any info will be greatly appreciated,

Make sure you don't use any radio calls (turn signals), you fly too slow, and throw a couple of ladders on top of the airplane for good measure.

I would strongly recommend not going to an uncontrolled field south of the border right now, unless you have a way to insure your plane will stay where you want it to. There was a warning issued in the past few days regarding aircraft theft in Mexico. Apparently the government is actually trying to crack down on the cartels, and they are getting VERY desperate for aircraft. A 207 was stolen at gunpoint from La Paz last year. Be smart!

Only rule I know for sure in Mexico is get the freight there and get the *(&( out. And if you get stuck there get ICCS to give you a ride and ask for the nicest hotel in town no matter what the cost. If you don't you might not live to regret it.

All good advice. And I'd be shocked if your insurance would cough on a mexican theft. I was always uncomfortable leaving my airplane at a 'big' airport overnight. And I always gave it a really good look before launching. See if panels look disturbed, etc. Unless I was family of a Mexican drug kingpin I wouldn't dare fly to a remote airport down there. That's just asking for trouble.

Paul, welcome to FI. Sorry that you asked a serious question and received the above replies. But that is the way it is here.

It has been quite some time since I have flown into a non-controlled airport in Mexico. wilky10 gave the only good reply. In the past I always used the same rules as in the United States for uncontrolled airports, worked very well.

Do double check your insurance policy and hire private security to guard your aircraft.

Ok, if it's going to be like that, here goes:

Exactly who would come to a site like this for definitive answers to serious questions on international flying?

AND, exactly who would encourage him to go to the 'other' site to get those answers? Before you start calling others' comments 'moronic', make sure you've moved out of your glass house.

taxi1wire--Check with the FAA and the (LO) Jepp charts--usually the info can be found there. Don't EVER come to a website (even the NBAA site) and take the info you get here as gospel. Good luck! TC

P.S.--Con-pilot and the others WERE right about the security guard. It's even more necessary the further off the beaten path you go. IMO.

I guess the kidnappings, human trafficking, drug trafficking, murders, corrupt government, and payoffs are all just rumors. Not all of Mexico is like Cancun. There is a very good reason Mexicans will leave everything behind to run across our boarder to get to our country. It is a 3rd world country afterall. You have to call things as you see them.

I'll give you that there are worse places in the world and the post was meant mostly as a joke anyways.

do be careful as well, as the pattern entry procedures may be closer to ICAO standard, not FAA standard. So you may find some problems if you do not fly the proper entry pattern if there happens to be someone else in the pattern. It is not uncommon to find the procedure to fly direct to the center of the airport then fly out to join the traffic pattern. This is also reccomended to signal taxis from the town, or to check the runway (low pass) for holes, livestock, people, cars, etc.

You can also hire a security guard to watch your aircraft through UVAvmex or Pegasus (although not sure if you can really trust those guys either, but at least you get a corporation backed financial recourse if something does happen).

Have fun, carry lots of American beer, cigarrettes, and cash. You would be wise to convert your dollars to pesos before you leave.

Some uncontrolled airports have the runways dug-up in order to keep drug traffickers from using them. Some of the others have soldiers based at the airpots, they will check paperwork and inspect the aircraft, you treat them well they will be good just be vigilant they may take something that's not theirs. As far as flight rules, just do as you do in the good old USA and all will be fine.

A pilot and his family were in their Cessna Stationair on Tuesday, preparing to take off from a dirt runway in Baja California, when they were forced at gunpoint to abandon the airplane, Bob Collins, president of the Aviation Crime Prevention Institute, told AVweb. "Three men jumped the fence, then three others in a Nissan Sentra pulled onto the runway, blocking it," Collins said. "One of them had a gun, and they broke a window in the airplane and forced the family out. They pushed the Sentra off to the side and torched it, then all six of them climbed into the airplane. There was baggage in there too, and it barely made it into the air," Collins said. ACPI had issued an alert recently that aircraft thefts are rising in the border region. "Mexican officials are seizing aircraft, so smugglers are out looking for new ones," he said
