"The US Transportation Department said the crew on the flight, which was operated by ExpressJet Airlines for Continental, repeatedly sought permission to offload their 47 passengers at the airport in Rochester, Minnesota in the early hours of August 8.

Instead, they were stuck on the ground for nearly six hours with just snacks to eat, after the local representative of Mesaba Airlines erroneously cited security rules for refusing to allow the passengers off the plane."

Any ASA Crew which has dealt with the Mesaba stations will not be amazed at this article. Our stations at their worst are far better than any Mesaba station I have worked with.

This winter those clowns are going to break airplanes or hurt people attempting to de-ice planes. I guarantee it.

Does anyone find it weird that the XJT crew was begging and pleading with some Mesaba gate agent or ramper all night long? By 3 AM I would've called the local police department (the city owns the airport). Then tell them that all the passengers and crew are stranded at the airport, as the captain I am taking the passengers off the plane and need them to be escorted due to TSA being closed. End of story.

So, I guess an "planned" alternate can be anywhere there is enough concrete regardless if there are planned accomodations for the aircraft and crew? Who planned RST as an alternate and did they think about what might happen if it were to be actually used? Did they call anyone to make sure the aircraft could be handled properly or was it an emergency diversion?

By the way, the FBO handles large aircraft for King's, Prince's and diplomats world-wide (for Mayo Clinic) and they could have handled the aircraft there as well.

Listening to that STRIB tape I heard nothing about passengers unable to deplane but I did hear XJT coordinator say they had another half hour to make a decision and the Mesaba manager state they wanted to get them off if possible...

Listen to the tape again!

It seems that if they diverted to an "unserved" airport, that the airport manager would be the go-to person on security procedures. Mesaba doesn't own the airport, or manage the airport, or run security there. I assume they just lease space to operate flights in/out of it. How does that make them the final authority on security there?

Thats why the airport manager was quoted the day after the incident as saying the pax could have come off at any time. He was telling the truth.

MESABA ops ROCKS!!!

Now that Richard Anderson has to explain to people and the press what happened at that Mesaba station, I am sure his opinion of DCI carriers has waned. I bet he can't wait to keep that side of our business shrinking.

Bye Bye--General Lee

Umm-Delta owns the company which runs these outstations-idiot!

Damn-
You sure are brain-damaged!

After dealing with plenty of XJ run ramps... this doesn't suprise me one bit.

A bit more command leadership on the part of the captain would have been very beneficial as well.

The point of this thread is that MESABA was running the ramp here.

(We all know you are not really smart enough for the regional forums.)

You're dealing with a female captain. She can't think for herself.
If it were me, I would have de planed the aircraft. Ordered pizza and put it on my own credit card. Then after I was fired, I would get a job with one of the media outlets and be the spokesman as to why the airlines suck and make my millions there.

"Real Men of Genius"
-Seriously-

-I love this post-perfect solution... Great way to deal with this f-cked up industry!

Almost EVERY city the Avro's went to were NWA ground stations. Now after the bankruptcy's I don't think we go to a single city served by NWA (or Delta) ground employees. It's either a regional or a staffing company (WFS, Aramark, ect.)

Ummm....Mesaba's IATA code is XJ.

Walter,

Rez just sent me a message...He said it was all Skywest's fault....If they had voted in ALPA, this wouldn't have happened....:D

oh, the irony....I'll let you figure out your mistake.

Better yet... look at post 16. Gotcha, b!tch!

General Lee, Richard Anderson would step over his mother to save a dollar, just like every other airline executive. He doesn't care for the well being of any passenger, DL or not, and his opinion of DCI carriers will only fade when they start costing him more than it would to just have DL pilots do the flying. There's a reason Continental has Gulfstream fly their pax around with students in the right seat learning how to fly while the pax think they're on Continental Airlines. It's CHEAP AS F**K.

whoever took over the Montana stations really sucks thus far, too bad because that place use to be by far the best run stations. Should be a fun winter. Nice job DL!

Comair is doing the handling- I've heard the same thing from a OO station personal working the OO UA flts. Passengers have come by their counter saying, "we sure miss you guys".
Yeah, should be a fun winter.
SkyWest CS/ground handlers rock!! The best in the biz.

Horizon run stations are hands down the best run stations I've ever been to. Great bunch of people and they all seem happy, its weird.

The worst run stations are Mesaba for sure!! Been to DTW? Geeeez what a nightmare.

Only at a Mesa ba station have I seen someone drive the jetway to within a foot of the airplane, run outside to hook up the ground power and then waddle back up to finish the driving the jetway.

It's as if their employees have some kind of priority-ordering syndrome. But at the rate they pay those guys, I guess they can only afford retards.

I don't know if any airline pays their ground people less...as a matter of fact, isn't that our motto?

Is this true? If it is it makes a lot of sense. I've found most female pilots are way too "nice" or accommodating to just say F it I'm doing THIS. Except for the butch ones of course.

Yes it's true.
Like you said, females are too passive.
Hell, didn't the crew want to get to the hotel? maybe they were a stand up/ continuos duty/ high speed crew....what ever you want to call it

When did final authority go to Mesaba rampers? Will someone send me that memo?

When they 'own' the equipment to unload passengers. Don't know much about ERJs. But, don't they require external stairs - even at their meager door height? An 'evacuation' probably was not prudent given the risk of injury.

Bueller.... Bueller....

-Duh!

The point I was making was in response to Gen Lee's idiotic post about all DCI carriers. Since MESABA runs that station, and since they are a WHOLLY-OWNED SUBSIDIARY, RA really has no one to blame-other than himself....

Looks like the whole situation was due (in large part) to the type of incompetent foolishness we have all been warning everyone to expect from Mesaba.

(The point of posting the link was to show that they describe themselves as a "wholly-owned subsidiary of DAL.)
-You get what you pay for.

Maybe someone can help figure this one out. maybe the General can help, he is that all knowing. I thought that Delta after the merger combined all the wholly-owned regionals ramp agents . I think they (Mesaba, Compass, and Comair) are now called RHS. So why is it Mesaba fault, wouldnt it be Delta's fault its there Ramp handing service.

-Raskel-
on the ramp agent being pay? back a few years ago I work as a rampie for pinnical. Mesaba a year later took over the station where I worked and ended up getting a 2 dollar rasie. As I no longer work for mesaba its a good thing.
