Hi guys,

I'm considering accepting a Dash 8 Ca. position with MESA because I'm desperate for PIC time; I have plenty of heavy jet SIC time with almost 7000 TT and no majors will touch my applications because I do not meet their stupid 1000 PIC requirements.
Any comments?

do you have a wife and/or kids that you like to see every now and then?....or do you just plain like enjoying life?...

because with only 8 days off a month, I don't see how you possibly can. good luck...I wouldn't do it..Take the way with more self respect..

I do have family and with my current schedule right now (3weeks on 1 week off, plus the commute half way around the world) I think the 8 days off is a better deal.

I work for Mesa. I understand your situation. Look around, there are better deals out there. Trust me. DON'T COME TO MESA. -Bean

Can you explain more? What kind of complains do you have for Mesa? I'm not going there to make money so you can skip the salary issue.

thanks,

Can you not upgrade where you are? If they are worried about you not having a type rating at all go get a type in a citation or something-it would be out of pocket but WTF you would be way ahead of going to Mesa! Will your outfit let you take a leave of absence to do this so that you have somewhere to go when you get the pic time? Just things to think about...

from what I understand they won't assign a captain slot until -after- training so it's a bit of a risk... Doesn't seem worth it.

I'm pretty sure the street captain thing is over.

Come here now and you can be someone's beyotch for 3-4 years if you like (sleep on an airplane, live in the airport on 12 hour ready reserve shifts for 6 days on/2 days off)

Or go to skywest and upgrade in 1.7 years, or Republic for that matter.

Tell them that on the interview and they might even make you chief pilot.

If salary isn't an issue, find a left seat freight hauling job at your home airport. Nothing glamorous, but at least a B1900. Get your 1000 (1300 for SWA) and get outta there. FAR 135 will let you fly 1200 a year instead of 121 1000 too.

Good luck!

There are a hundred corporate jobs out there that you can get 1000 pic jet. Go get one of those. Everything in your life will be better.

The interview board may see that you have heavy jet time and figure out that you will be gone in a year or less. They may not want to put the training money into you. Sad to say.....you may have gone past the point of no return.....maybe Mesa wouldn't hire you!!! Trust me, that is a good thing for you. Good Luck!

I believe that Mesa is still hiring for street CA for the Dash-8 Delta operation, east coast. They do not care if you have heavy time-and in fact your experience would be very welcomed for this position. There will be a one year signing contract that is pro-rated. So if you need PIC 121 time-which is what most majors are looking for-then apply. PM me if you want.

Dont do it dude........there are plenty of other gigs out there without the pity. Having that emblom on your ID is like walking around with a goiter. Is that the correct spelling of g-o-i-t-e-r. Oh well.....dont ruin your life bro.

Bean-just a question, don't take it personal...I'm not trying to come after you or anything, but was just wondering, you work for Mesa and always tell people not to come to work there. If you feel that strongly about it why don't you leave? A lot of people feel that same way and offer advice to people to not come there, but if everyone would take their own advice, don't you think that would help things out for the long run?

Have you considered flying an MD80 for Allegiant? They'll hire without a significant amount of turbine PIC, and upgrades are faster than other airlines (maybe because they pay slightly more than the better regionals, but then again, it still beats being a street captain for MESA).

I don't have all day to fully explain mesa, but please don't do it.

Try SKW instead:

EMB-120 Upgrade in 4-6 months.

You can do the EMB upgrade even if you get hired into the CRJ. They waive the one year equipment lock for upgrades.

1200 hours/year on the EMB (grandfather rules).

Lot's of bases available.

Although I can't answer on behalf of Bean, I can say that most of us are trying to get out...if not already in LAMA (Life After Mesa Airlines). Captains are getting picked up at an increased rate to most all operators as major airline hiring picks up. Realatively junior FOs (under 2 years) are leaving for Republic and Skywest. Those that are staying for a little while are junior captains (that need pic) and senior FOs (that are on the cusp of an upgrade). I, myself, could have been outta here within the last year or so, but I am hoping that industry consolidation does not occur and I am holding out for DL & UAL.

Wish me luck.

Yeah, that's such a stupid requirement, having pilots with proven track record in making command decisions in complex aircraft.

I wouldn't count on getting the Dash Captain spot even if Mesa has offered it to you already. Mesa is notorious for bait and switch when it comes to that sort of thing. You will get whatever seat they think they need you in, no matter how much time you have in your logbook. When you show up for training they will put you in whatever airplane they feel like. The training department here is chaotic at best and you will not necessarily end up where they told you at the interview.

I wanted the Dash or 1900 and got the CRJ. I spoke to a new hire recently who went all the way through ERJ ground school and on the last day of class was told he would be on the CRJ instead. Guess what, another three weeks of systems class for him. When I met him, he had been with the company for three months and hadn't even been to the sim yet. Don't believe any promises that Mesa makes to you. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for all the inputs, I filed a LOA from my current airline so after I get my PIC time I have an option to go back. I only need 500 PIC time anyway.

Hey, I think GoJets is still hiring left seaters with your kind of time... perfect opportunity for those who are tired of waiting for seniority. And, it looks great on your resume!

Crazy enough, there is one GoJetter in gs at CAL. I guess thats fitting considering the history there.
