I think they needed to burn some fuel due to landing weight concerns. The news report I read said they dumped their fuel and then landed but I don't recall a fuel dump button in the CRJ 200.
Sure there is! It's called the flight spoiler lever!

Honestly though, being Mesa and all, I'm surprised they didn't divert to somewhere they could fix the damage and then Greyhound the people somewhere to catch a ride.
