By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, Aug 6th 2009 13:31Z, last updated Thursday, Aug 6th 2009 13:31Z
A Mesa Airlines Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of US Airways, flight YV-2920/US-2920 from Santa Barbara,CA to Phoenix,AZ (USA) with 49 passengers and 4 crew, struck a flock of geese while taking off from Santa Barbara, one goose hitting a wing and another one hitting the nose gear. The crew levelled off at 3000 feet, went into a holding for about 20 minutes and returned to Santa Barbara for a safe landing.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers rebooked onto other flights.

The airline reported, that the airplane received minor damage, but was ferried out of Santa Barbara for repairs.

Geese? That's nothing. Try getting a pelican right in the nose. XD

why would you hold for 20 minutes

I think they needed to burn some fuel due to landing weight concerns. The news report I read said they dumped their fuel and then landed but I don't recall a fuel dump button in the CRJ 200.

Sure there is! It's called the flight spoiler lever!

Honestly though, being Mesa and all, I'm surprised they didn't divert to somewhere they could fix the damage and then Greyhound the people somewhere to catch a ride.
