I was watching some coverage of the RNC and in McCain's bio montage it said that he had a son who is an airline pilot? Deets?

A thought on the election: Remember that in all matters domestic, a system of checks and balances exists. The President, by and large, cannot make new law without the congress. Similarly, the congress cannot make new law without the President (except by overriding a veto with a 2/3rds vote in both houses). A symbiotic relationship, if you will.

However, in national security issues, the President enjoys almost a carte blanche authority to act without the congress' say so. While the congress can concievable deny funding for a particular enterprise, the President has the discretion as Commander-In-Chief to use the forces at his disposal. It is a situation almost unique in the world... The military is entirely accountable to civilian leadership in the form of the executive branch.

2/3rds of the job of President is filling that CINC role. The overriding question in my mind is "who makes the best CINC?"

Average gas price during the Bush administration so far has been $208.20 (if current prices hold the average will be $215.42 by the end of his term). The concept of gas prices going up with an Obama administration just because he is a democrat is complete crap. Both upcoming presidential candidates have reasonably sound short (less than 10 years) term energy plans. McCain does not have a long term clean/renewable energy plan.

The biggest difference is who will be able to execute their plans. Its doubtful that McCain will get much cooperation from the Democratic Congress.

I wanted McCain to win in 2000. If he had, there would not have been a plan to "do more with less." Today, after having one airline close up on me and getting furloughed from another a couple of months later, I still feel he is the best candidate.

I do not want my daughter and her generation to deal with this crap. What is done is done. Iraq and Afghanistan are issues that cannot be walked away from because the American people like their gas cheap and their conflicts quick, tidy, and out of their living rooms.

I have already lost my job (twice), and, with a 10% domestic capacity cut on the horizon, others will follow. As quickly as the industry grew in the last 5 years, this is not unexpected. Just look at the IT/dot com craze in the 90's.

If I have to change careers so that my daughter will have a better, safer country in which to live, so be it.

He may better in some regards such as unions. I am not big on unions in this day and age. They have served their purpose. But there is one issue that stands out in my mind where he will not be.

He has already stated he would raise taxes on those who make $250K+. Companies are owned by individuals who pay taxes. American owned airlines (and any other company for that matter) with less discretionary cash on hand due to higher taxes thus will have less money to do the sorts of things that can grow a company.

So many have pointed out Obama being against foreign control or airlines. Do you think it may make it easier for foreign companies (with lower tax liabilities) to come into this market? Additionally, further restricting the amount of oil we can get into this country helps our jobs how?


Either way, we are all beating a dead horse. I am not going to change your mind and you are not going to change my mind. However, those of you who believe that one man/ woman as president is going to change anything, sorely mistaken. No matter who is elected, it will be more of the same old stuff.

Take a speeding or stoplight traffic camera. It is administered by the town but actually operated by a private company. This company actually earns its profits from the number of tickets it issues. Do you see the problem with this?

Charter schools are a big problem. Sure they sound good on paper... Corporations have been trying to get charter schools in many counties and town. When Katrina hit New Orleans the shock was tremendous... Quietly the entire public school system was replaced by private charter schools...

My viewpoints are not radical. The privatization our of gov't has taken on radical change. I don't like to see our public realms, civic areas and democracy handed over to corporations.

There are many who believe that everything the gov't does should be done by private companies. The gov't should only adminster the contracts and hand out truckloads of tax payer dollars. (which was basically done in Iraq. The US Military is simply a shell).

Is democracy the ideal? Our founding fathers despised democracy, favoring a constitutional republic. Pure democracy is mob rule, hardly civil and hardly fair. A constitutional republic favors the rule of law, not perfect but the best system the world has seen so far.

He spent a lot of time in IL politics (I lived there and it stinks) and seems buddy-buddy with Boss Daley. On the national/international level, he's done....what? I think he's a pretty present to the dems who loathe GWB. The packaging is pretty (he is a good speaker and very charismatic), but the box is empty. To me, he comes across as pompous and deceiving. His Germany visit and his smoking (in an FDR wheelchair kind of way) are two examples of this. McCain has a temper. It’s a known fact. Is it bad? I bet McCain’s reaction to Tanzania and Kenya in August 1998 wouldn’t have been a few cruise missiles. Obama’s comments about Iran and Iraq defy logic. He gets guidance on the future of Iraq from unnamed military advisors and then blows off Patreaus -- the expert.

I sincerely believe that stability in Iraq and the Middle East will quell the escalating uncertainty in the US economy and energy prices. Fixing Iraq will help fix our economy.

I'm sorry.. After reading this I almost threw up in my lap. You are right, there is somewhat of a cloud of mystery around Obama because he is "new to Washington". I watched some of his speech at the RNC. He did not lay out a plan on how he was going to fix things. If he couldn't beat Bush the last two times..That alone should say something. My deal is, if the same tired tactics this government is using are not working.. Then it is time for a CHANGE. And thats what Obama represents. He HAS the ability to inspire folks at home and abroad. He may be a little inexperience. But, he has displayed that he can surround himself with smart people and make good judgement when needed.This is what this country needs to rally itself out of the SLUMP the Bush/Republicans put us in. He can not fix this country alone. Thats why he has asked the American people to rally behind him and help fix Washinton.

It amazes me how a lot of people are willing to vote against their best interest.

Keynesian economics is much better and provides for a better distribution of wealth for most citizens. What you are describing is laissez fare or Friedmanism economics, which is the privatization of the state.

Jefferson rejected the Central Bank and multi tiered credit system. One could argue that the IMF and World Bank are quite the same but for global economies whereas the FedReserve is the US central bank. The IMF and World Bank are too influenced by US foreign and/or economic policy...

Marxism is bad yes... but so is extreme capitalism, corny capitalism or disaster capitalism. They are all meant to take advantage of the average citizen, exploit him/her and line the pockets of a select few. In order to do this democracy or specifically for your needs, constitutional republic (or representative republic) must be eradicated. That is, for example, what the Patriot Act is all about...
