It has been widely published that Delta has:
a) about $21 billion in debt
b) and a $5 billion underfunded pension plan

What do other airlines have for debt? How much debt did United and U.S. Air have BEFORE Bankruptcy, and how much do they have now that they have both wiped some of the debt off their books?

How much debt does American, Northwest, and Continental have?

How much debt do some of the LCCs have? Southwest, AirTran, Jetblue, Frontier, ATA, America West?

I'm just wondering because the papers always talk about Delta's debt burden but never mention other airlines being in such bad shape debt wise. I know Delta is going to have a very difficult time ever paying down this debt, and it will hurt possible future profits for a long, long time. The interest payments alone are going to hinder Delta for decades. Good luck to those associated with Delta, and let's all hope Delta survives to see 5 years from now!!!!!!!!

Nobody has any idea how much debt other airlines have?

Nobody knows how much debt US Airways and United had before and after restructuring their debt?

Debt

Southwest has $1.6 B in long term debt from the latest 10Q quarterly.

There are some other accrued liabilities also but aren't included in the term "long term debt".
The first column is this quarter, the 2nd column is a year earlier

Counterparty fuel hedge deposits $ 525 $ 117

Accrued vacation pay 117 109

Accrued aircraft rent 93 114

Accrued profitsharing and savings plans 72 126

Other 219 184

$ 1,026 $ 650

Thanks Chase, finally somebody answered.

Anyone else know the debt of other airlines??

I'm especially interested in US Airways and United and what they had before bankruptcy. I looked at the SEC site and found some info, but most of it was about cash on hand and bankruptcy info.

Maybe someone more intelligent than me can look on that SEC site and find the info. I couldn't and just got frustrated looking at document after document.

Well there is "long term debt" and there is long term debt + leases. Delta has approximately $20B in long term debt and leases, but only $12.1B in "long term debt"..

Here's a breakdown of "long term debt"/ over quarterly revenue for some of the major carriers I dug up on the Fidelity Investment website.

Delta: $12.1B/$3.9B

AMR: $13.6B/$4.8B

NWA: $7.7B/$3B

CAL: $5.5B/$2.6B

SWA: $1.6B/$1.7B

JBLU: $1.2B/$320M
