Mad Dog ??

I'm sure some of you 121 guys can answer this for me:
Which aircraft has the nickname "Mad Dog"?
I've heard it used for the MD-80, and the MD-11.
Is it a generalization for all Douglass'?

The term "Maddog" can refer to any MD aircraft. At FedEx we only have one MD aircraft so we just call it the Maddog. I'm not sure what American did when they had both the MD11 and the MD80.

I have generally heard the mad dog used more for the MD-80.

Of course, there aren't that many MD-11's flying around in the daytime.

MD-11 has also been called:

- MD- 911

- More Death at Eleven

- The Scud (You can launch it but don't know where it's going to end up)

- The Death Cruiser II (DC10 was first)


All this from the days when it first hit the pax market in the early nineties. Freight dogs don't talk that way - they talk about how much better it is than all those other little airplanes on the ramp....

p.s. AA named their 80s "mad dogs" because the black bullet nose makes the aircraft look like a dog from the front. (for those who are interested in the real point of this thread.)

The problem with the MD-11 is that it's too much McDonnell and not enough Douglas!

oh, it was a lame marketing gimmick because when the MD80 first came out, McD called it the DC-9 Super 80... and Crandall really liked the sound of it. Nothin' super about it, unless you compare it to a regular DC-9!

no, it definitely doesn't matter... however I always called it the "MD80" or the "Mad Dog"... no wonder I always got wierd looks from everyone else!

p.s... after being based in STL for a while, I also started calling a "jet bridge" a jetway, started asking for "climb thrust" instead of climb power.... heck, once I even said, "gear up, your throttles!"
