The weather's fairly nice (for July in Houston) and I decided to go watch some of the fine operators flying in and out of Houston-Hobby while I ate my Subway sandwich. Pulled into my usual dead-end public roadway and parked. Had the AC set and Rush playing on the radio. After watching SWA fly in and out, a PC-12, some Falcons and Gulfstreams, finishing up my sandwich I noticed the signs. "No parking or standing". Must have been 300-400 of them around the perimeter of the airport fence it seems.

Wow, same experience I've been thru as well. I used munch on my lunch over by fort lauderdale executive, there was a real nice spot next to the runway. Now, they'll scare you away!

Whenever there's a national security alert, they put up roadblocks here at perimeter road at FLL, and close off the two viewing areas. Feel good, do nothin.

flywithastick,
I was just making the point I was not some anti government radical held up in my cabin on top of a mountain (not that there is anything wrong with that) but that I am an average American and I can see for myself some of our rights being taken away in the name of security and that is wrong. When my car was searched at the airport for no reason just in the name of security at that point I think things have gone a bit overboard. If preventative measures are going to be taken at least make it something that works and makes sense.

As for removing people directly under the flight path to protect against stingers and SA-7s, there is a minimum range under which the missile will not arm and detonate, you know. If you are TOO close, it won't work either.

I certainly won't put those numbers here, but I sadly doubt that was considered when our well-meaning original poster was banned from his inspirational location by the booger-eating morons in charge of airport secuity.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the ability for 9/11 to succeed was thwarted by the fourth airplane which was brought down by ordinary Americans. Everything that's been done since is an absolute waste of time and treasury. Where's real leadership when we need it?!?!?

SLC

Fly--they did the same d*a*m*n thing at Salt Lake International; there used to be an observation area where you could take your kids and watch aircraft take off and land on 34R/16L, along with several loudspeakers on tower. No more - closed it down for good several months ago.

On the positive side, the East side observation area is still open, though you have to sit in your car to watch from a lot farther away. They tried to close down the running/walking track south of the runways, but (thank God) got too much flack and reopened it during daylight hours.

Seems as if everyone except aviation is getting to life as normal before 9/11. The government continues to protect us from the threat that already got us; kinda like they used to train armies to fight the previous war...
