If you're gonna work at HPN try to look north in Putnam County NY. Brewster comes to mind and right over the state line in CT there is Danbury. It's about a 45 min ride down I684 if it's not raining out. It's still expensive but a little better up there.
 
Downwind: Our property taxes are high because we don't have a state income tax. In NY there's a state income tax, and depending on where he lives, there may be a city income tax! (NYC and Yonkers, e.g.)
 
I live exactly 1hr. east of HPN without traffic. House cost:350,000 Yearly real estate tax:8,500. State income tax: 400 month for 2 of us. and don't forget the property taxes on our cars approx: 800 per yr. Dont forget about eating, gas, insurance and housing bills....... Welcome to the New York area..
