Thanks arerromat! What would flying be without some music> It doesn't have to be too loud, and the music is usually "Heading for the highway" "Born to be wild"! You just have to know when to appropriately play it. Some of these flights are 12 hours long! Who doesn't mind a song or two? Especially over the ocean, can be very long and boring, a little music is just as refreshing as a hot cup of tea or a fresh brewed coffee!

The guys get tired and sleepy, as a cabin attendant I usually stay awake as a crew member, we listen to music or just good conversation or they teach me how to navigate, these are on empty flights or positioning back flights!

Welcome, Rock and Rollers!

And heah cum da trainwreck! :pimp:

Chuggin' to da sight of da accident! Sure wish she'd get my s/n right before impact.

Well, they have taken the yoke away from me and replaced it with a tray table. Great for holding the laptop and playing the iTunes library.

Our Opspecs prohibit listening/viewing entertainment radio or video or reading non-professional material on the flightdeck. One of our regular passengers who has a private FlexJet share recently advised us that he reported his Flex crew for such activity in his airplane as he viewed it to be unsafe.

Where do porn fit into the equation?

Rez O lewshun,

I bet your a spark plug of fun to fly with. I have no problem reading or listening to music as long as we are in good weather and normal cruise. Never will I do it when there is anything that requires more then normal amounts of attention, ie icing or penetrating a line of storms.

One more note, congradulations to the poster for the Summa Cum Laude! You deserved it! I noticed that that after you posted on your concern about music on board aircraft. This is such a high honor in school, are you now a pilot yourself sir, or desiring and working on your ratings? Either way, many of us, wish you the best and success in your career, although we may listen to music, we are still sharp and very understanding!

Thanks for your post!

Don't get too excited honey. It got me nowhere fast. There's no aviation career for me. Not after the huge frack up that I was blessed with from CAPT. I'm just here for the beer and laughs. Cheers! :)

So you have to be able to listen to your music to have fun.....

What ever happened to job satisfaction? Not enough?

Finally, would you listen to your Ipod during an FAA enroute inspection? yes/no?

Didn't you guys see the movie "Iron Eagle" He flew so much better when he was listening to his music.

Panty-in-a-wad check...

Rez, you need to pull those panties out of yer a$$ that are all in a wad. Lighten up and enjoy, when appropriate.

Blue skies and tailwinds.

Rez- you ever look at a newspaper during cruise?

I looked at a newspaper once..... once!

I was doing a CDO (stand up) and figured why not, the Capt is too..... besides this whole stiff professionalism thing is getting old.

The Capt. I was flying with looks at me and says... you know... usually my FO's get my newspaper for me.... I replied, I got 5K hours and I'm typed in this jet... get your own damn paper....

So there we were, climbing out, looking like two rejects on a park bench with newspapers open spread eagle.......

A little while longer I look at the FMA and realize I'm still in heading mode as the white needle drifts... Damn IT! Down went (my) paper and back to personal policy.

Well..... I guess I can't chew gum and walk at the same time...

For those about to rock.... I salute you!

So how do you do Ipod it with a Fed on board? :)

It's okay if you're Doug Masters and your gettin' ready to "fly the snake"....so long as "Chappy" has adjusted your mixture....

Let's grow up....

......"One vision"......

Now we've heard how the guys whose experience is comprised mostly of low altitude, short-ranged, domestic, daytime flying. How do the guys who fly a lot of long-range, domestice or oceanic, high altitude (FL390+) "Direct To" routings, or late night feel about it?

Personally, I don't have a problem with it as long as it's done right - simply stuffing your Ipod earbuds in your ears, then placing your headset over them isn't doing it right. You've got to have the proper equipment - something that mutes the music when ATC is talking; that way you don't miss any calls. You also should wait to screw around with the Ipod until you're at altitude and "settled in" for the flight. Last of all, it comes off once ATC starts you down.

If done properly, it can help enhance alertness on those long, "low intensity" legs. It's no different than the practice of allowing crew members to take short "power naps" while enroute - but it has to be done correctly.

If you get a lightspeed headset, you can plug the ipod right into the headset. The headset mutes the music 80 percent or so when either the intercomm or radio is used. I think their website is www.anrheadsets.com

here's a thought. if you can't listen to some jon secada, and hold a heading, maybe flying an airplane is not for you. not that i'm attempting to start a pissing match, but seriously. try flying single pilot, ifr, in the soup, in a navajo, with a flashlight in your mouth, trying to tune in the ILS on nav 1 and having to hold constant right wing down cause the a/p is deferred. throw in a little jon secada, and you'll see a smile on my face.

Excellent. I need to get hip to Jon secada. I usually rock black sabbath or zeppelin in these situations.

I guess I need to find out who this dude is too. My fav's are Rush, Journey, Clapton, Def Leppard, ZZ Top, Van Halen (pre and post David), and David Lee Roth... not necessarily in that order.

With that said, I'm gonna leave this post and Google Jon Secada

Peace, everyone.

...

Manhattan Transfer, Abba Gold,...............just kidding. Actually manhattan transfer isnt all that bad.

I love how this topic of listening to music in the cockpit acts like its on the forefront of new stuff to talk about.

How long has the ADF been out...how long have pilots been listening to music on it?

If anything it is safer now because an ipod/xm radio/mp3 is going to be much clearer and easier to hear while monitoring ATC and you don't have to re tune your xm radio as you cover ground.
