I am posting this for a friend who is currently flying for Alaska (2 years seniority), lives in Denver, and is trying to decide whether or not to make the jump to UAL. Pay seems comparable between the two, but the concerns are possible mergers/acquisitions and the long-term viability of the two carriers.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I'd stay if it were my choice. 2 years into a 1500 pilot list or 1 day into 9000 pilots with a merger on the table.

You tell me?

Gup

Sounds like your friend is sick of commuting or wants to some day fly widebodies. If either one is the case, then your friend should go ahead and make the move to UAL.

Other than that, I agree with GuppyWN... just stay put.

If your friend is looking for stability among the airlines, then he should look into SWA, UPS, or FedEx.

All the rest of us are in danger of taking it in the shorts with mergers & acquisitions.

Good luck to your friend.

Recommend stay put. Too many horror stories of guys moving and it costing them. How many guys/girls below him at Alaska?

Just to clarify. I hate commuting but I do it. I'd love to fly widebodies all over the world but my airline doesn't offer that. I got hired at 3 majors and decided to come to WN. It wasn't the aircraft, it wasn't the route map. It was the people and the chance to have a paycheck for 30 years. So far so good.

It all comes down to one simple thing. No matter where you are this is JUST A JOB. I'd go to/stick with the one that way going to give me the best chance for long term security.

That's a timeless sentence. Substitute SWA/UPS/FedEx for the flavor of the day.

New to the airline business? You remind me of the kool aid briefers at TK when I was hired in 2000. A lot of my more gullible classmates fell for that and bought their captain's houses on first year pay.

You sound like a very happy individual. I'm sure you're a pleasure to fly with.

Sorry to have p!ssed in your Cheerios this morning sir. Yes, I'm as new to the airline business as you are. But, you are the all wise and knowing.

Typical FI bitter beer face ogre.

I've totally underestimated you.

Not only are you a MENSA member, but you are a humorist to boot... a very rare combination.

Congratulations!

Baze, your response is only mildly stupider than your original statement. Amusing, nonetheless.

I understand your pain, but if I were you I would stay put. Who knows when the next airline down turn will happen. When was the last merger of any kind resulting in everything staying the same or not. Good luck.

I would not leave Alaska for UAL. Who knows how the merger situation will turn out - why take that risk? Commuting sucks but living with the anxiety that you could be furloughed at any time sucks worse. If you really hate commuting, move to SEA. Plus, the upgrade time at UAL (or a future CAL/UAL) could be many, many years.

So your friend wants to work for CAL huh? Well going to UAL might be the way to do it. But I'd stay put as well. Can't really tell how that intergration's gonna work out. I think DAL/NWA will be less painful. Who knows.....The best company to work for is the one that gives you the steadiest paycheck.
