There was a post from Winged Sig that he had a class date and then it was cancelled because Atlas was returning a B747-400.

I just finished class with Kalitta Air which had 4 furloughed Atlas B747-400 F/O's in it. They were all recalled during class and quit Kalitta to go back to Atlas.

What is going on over there at Atlas? How can they cancel a class just because they are loosing one airplane?

Winged Sig if you still want to fly the B747, although it's not the -400, just the Classic, give Kalitta a call. Kalitta will be interviewing soon for the September class.

I was in the April 26th class. We had 12 F/O's. 4 quit to go back to Atlas and another guy from TWA took a LOA to do real estate. So we lost 5 out of 12!

Kalitta is upgrading 26 F/O's to Captain this year which means they need 52 F/O's to replace the one's that are upgrading and even out the Captain to F/O crews. The first of the 7 F/O's in my class should be finishing IOE here soon, so as you can see Kalitta is behind the 8 Ball right now getting F/O's out on the line.

I did my simulator training in MSP at NATCO. My sim instructor was a retired NWA B747 Classic pilot working for PAN AM training. A great guy and instructor. While in MSP NWA pulled the plug on their B747-200 simulator number 2. They have 2 B747-200 simulators and now one of them is shut down. They also furlough a bunch of Simulator Tech's, about 25 of them and 8 management people from the Simulator Building.

No one really knows why NWA shut down the simulator as it was booked through the end of the year?

Is Kalitta upset that they are losing people right away? i.e. look less favorably at furlouged pilots?

Kalitta crews are scheduled for 17 days a month and the rest off at home. You can live anywhere you want. You can work first half or last half of a month or you may choose a split line for the month. Kalitta has hired many furloughed (from the majors) crewmembers in the past. I dont think there is much thought by managment as to the possibility that those folks will up and leave some day.The sim in MSP sucks compared to the sim in DEN. Most crewmembers prefer DEN.

My Friend Connie

Hummm,

Lets see ... F/O on the B747 Classic ... first year I'm gonna collect a maximum of $41,000 bucks (oh yes, that is the first year after training) and:

A-Plan: NONE
B-Plan: NONE
401K Match: NONE
Benefits: Virtually NONE

(but I bet we stay in the finest hotels ...)

Kewl, I'll be gone from my miserable life for 17 days a month, plus commute, let us count that as 3 days ... wow ... 10 days a month off ... I'll be a millionaire by the time I'm 150.

Where do I sign up!

Hey TransMach,

I was working for Connie in 1998, Captain on the L1011 making over 100k per year, living in Dana Point.

Then I got recalled by US Airways, after almost 8 years of furlough, and made the BIG mistake to go back there and after 4 years got furloughed again.

US Airways has no real benefits to talk about. The moral stinks, the pilots retirement program was cancelled, more pay cuts and probably more furloughs are coming soon.

A-Plan: NONE
B-Plan: NONE
401K Match: NONE
Benefits: Virtually NONE

I haven't flown for almost 2 years and now I'm back at Kalitta and very happy to be here. It's tough out there when you don't have a flying job and you're a pilot!

Kalitta Air's first year pay is no different than most airlines first year pay. LOW!

If you want to be home more move close to KLAX or KJFK and drive to the airport. Or move to KDTW and they will fly you from your home to your trip.

As far as becoming a millionaire flying airplanes for a living, good luck! You'll not get rich flying airplanes unless you are really lucky.

It sounds neat but I have to wonder, with 17 day tours, is it primarily a single-man's gig?

I'd hate to give the UPS driver MORE incentive to spend time at my house. ;)
