Jumpseat Denied

Now I'm confused. The guy with the ALPA card was denied? Boy am I glad to be a freight dog when this stuff starts up.

Go back and read the first post (slowly). IB6 doesn't state that he himself was denied.

As a commuter, and a JB dude, I do everything I can for other commuters (esp OAL). I had an older (ahem 59 YO) NWA CA on the JS one day on a transcon. Got him some pillows and blankets so he could sprawl out and catch some Z's on the way across.

Rather than chastise JS'ers for something I may not agree with or they have nothing to do with, I simply say "welcome aboard, make yourself at home".

It's too bad everyone's not as cool as me!

We pilot's are ego driven idiots. If you think that by denying one guy a ride to work you have accomplished anything other than breeding more ill will and division in an already fractured pilot profession then you are deluding yourself.
Previous post said it all, the Capt. probably does not commute. He is p----d off at the world and has found the one place where he can forget about his little problem (VIAGRA might help). You may not like it but the right thing to do if you have a JS agreement with the other company is to let him/her on and suck it up. I am sure that many of the commuters at your own airline would appreciate that you don't throw them on your sword just because you have a stick crammed somewhere dank and smelly.

I agree, if you have an agreement, honor it. If you want to look down towards the "no-pay start ups", dont get into an agreement.

Frankly it would not bother me if JB was banned from all ALPA JS's. Not from a personal standpoint against the pilots, but because much of the damage to the industry was inflicted as a result of the (at the time) lowered bar by JB.

From a NWA perspective none of our bases are in LGA, FLL, or JFK. Other than leisure travel none of our pilots use JB to go to work. On the other had we are providing thier pilots a free ride to work in order to allow JB to compete against us.

Imagine the world of hurt JB would be in if suddenly none of thier pilots could commute to work. I'm weeping crocodile tears already..... :bomb:

Let's blame Jet Blue on this as well......
NWA's Compass unit begins recruiting
Carrier plans to boost work force to 300 by year's end

Compass Airlines, Northwest Airlines' new regional unit, has begun recruiting workers as it aims to begin flying later this year.

Compass plans to hire 120 pilots and flight attendants and about 60 other staff this year, said Northwest spokesman Roman Blahoski.

The airline expects to have more than 300 employees, including those already working for Compass, and a fleet of 10 planes by year's end, according to the carrier's Web site, www.compassairline.com. In time, it expects to fly 36 planes.

The Compass site went live last week. It advertises that the airline is hiring pilots, maintenance controllers, quality-control representatives, quality auditors and maintenance supervisors. Right now, the Web site's main purpose is "to assist in the employee recruitment process," Blahoski said. The site also has some background on Compass and its leadership team.

Compass has one 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200 plane and will start receiving delivery of 36 new 76-seat Embraer 175 jets in the second quarter. It has received approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation but still is in the process of getting its certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Eagan-based Northwest has said that Compass initially would offer two daily flights between the Twin Cities and Washington, D.C., using the CRJ plane. Compass has told the Air Line Pilots Association at Northwest that it would start flying the CRJ within four months and the Embraer 175s in the third quarter, according to the union.

Ron Hay, a spokesman for the Northwest pilots union, estimates that Compass would need several hundred pilots for 36 planes.

Furloughed Northwest pilots largely will staff the new airline, because they get first shot at Compass jobs under their union contract. However, Hay expects Compass will have to hire additional pilots from elsewhere. A first-year co-pilot at Compass would make about $23.18 an hour versus about $30 at Northwest, according to ALPA.

Northwest has 526 furloughed pilots, but that number has declined in recent months because of attrition, retirements and recalls by Northwest. About 125 furloughed pilots have returned to work at Northwest in the past few months, according to ALPA.

Although other regional airlines are hiring, industry consultants don't expect Compass to run into any trouble.

"I suspect that pilots at other airlines who have taken pay hits may be interested," said airline consultant Doug Abbey of the Velocity Group in Washington, D.C. "Compass will be flying state-of-the-art airplanes, which would be appealing to pilots."

Another incentive is that growth at regional airlines is much faster than at major airlines so pilots will move up the ranks faster, said Jerry Glass, a former airline executive who advises airlines on labor issues.

The unions for Northwest's flight attendants and ground workers said they haven't heard anything about hiring at Compass. Northwest has recalled all of its 830 furloughed flight attendants.

In addition to Compass, Northwest has two other regional flying partners: Eagan-based Mesaba Airlines and Memphis, Tenn.-based Pinnacle Airlines. Northwest is buying Mesaba, which will become a subsidiary.

Perhaps if you'd use a proper noun instead of all pronouns in your post I could decode what you were trying to say. What I want to know is: Who did the guy work for who was denied and what was his status with that carrier/ALPA(scab, furloughee, never a member, etc).

02-05-07...LGA-MSP, NW 757, first flight of the day, had to be 80 to 100 seats open. Two of us going home, Captain denied one of us because one of us didn't have an ALPA card. I am amazed this crap is still going on.

Okay guys. It was me that was denied yesterday on that flight. I went down to the cockpit to ask for a ride home and get my form signed. The only thing out of the Capt's mouth was "Do you have an ALPA card". I said "no" and he said "I cant take you then". I said okay and left, then went back up to the gate and got out a pass and went right back on the airplane. I only commute on NWA so I keep passes handy for when this happens. This is not the first time for me. End of story.

Yes we have a written agreement with NWA. This was way out of line.

Out of line? I don't think so. I've never denied a JetBlue jumpseater. Despite all of my complaints about JetBlue, I always allow them to ride. They may have to hear me b!tch about transcon turns or cabin cleaning for a minute or two before I sign the form, but they always get a ride. That being said, it's any Captain's right to refuse the jumpseat to anyone, recip agreement or not.

Relax Jetblue. . .Northwest has the most unfavorable jumpseat policy of any US major today for offline jumpseaters.

I have been left behind by NWA as well.

I had to add that the way to go is on UPS. Those guys are great!! It's almost like first class but without the comfy seat because some guys will tell you to help yourself to their galley. When you list on UPS they also make a crew meal available to the jumpseater.

Anyway, since I know IB6 it was a little more obvious to me. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that it was 2 JB dudes asking for rides. One has an ALPA card (furloughed - I think it was IB6) in his possession. The other, presumedly a JB dude, does not (don't know who the person is - I would bet never a member). He is summarily left behind by the probable non-commuting pontificator. I only know of one scab on the JB list and I doubt it was him since he doesn't live in MSP.

Clear as mud? BTW, you may want to check the spelling of Hemingway.

I think if a pilot that tries to jumpseat with a carrier he has an agreement with is denied he should say "Ok Capt. Xxxxx, if that's the way you want it a$$hole then I ask you to go and F yourself!! You'll be hearing from my jumpseat coord....Now piss off!" Ok - maybe a little harsh - but this can not continue to happen. Fellow pilots rely on offline carriers to get to and from work and we sure don't need a trip to the CP's office because some prick had a grudge against another pilot group.

I say this is the perfect place to out these jerks...Post names, companies and flight info and lets put these guys on notice!!
