Job Fairs... worth it, or waste?

I was hired at NetJets as a result of attending a job fair. Now this was early last year and NetJets had serious recruiting problems due to the low pay. Derinda and Jerry looked like the Maytag Repair Techs at the fair. Everyone was lined up at SWA, Cathay, & AWA. But making face to face contract with one of them can be very valuable. Derinda called me 2 days after the fair to schedule an interview and I started indoc 6 weeks later.

If you know who you want to work for and they are going to be there, I'd day it's worth it. Lots of times the people who do the recruiting won't or don't return phone calls and we all know that can be frustrating. I did two phone interviews with CS and got an email that said "thanks, but no thanks". Not to be detered by that, I went to the DC Air Inc and was the first one in line to talk to them and I brought ONE resume with me. They were impressed, and on Monday afternoon I got a call for an interview. Was it worth it? Not only YES, but HELL YES. To get out of the regionals to a place where they treat you with respect?? Absolutely. Heck, I spent 8K to try and get in at SW, what's a few more hundred for somewhere else? ( I now regret getting the 73Type, it has been more of a hinderance than a help). I wasn't excited at the time to spend $400 for 10 minutes, but in reality, it was WAY worth it. I guess if we don't want to give our money to KD, anybody is free to start their own service and charge less right? Gotta love America!

It is worth it just to press the flesh and put a face with a name. I would skip some of the seminar stuff and just hit the face to face at the booths. If I remember it was cheaper that way (they don't check ID's at the door ).

I had sent a resume' to NJ snail mail. Never heard from them. Went to the fair and they sent me the app by the end of the week. Interviewed a month after that and was hired the month after that.

I was worth it to me.

I actually hate to see any money going to him because of his actions during the Netjets pilot negotiations, but that is another story. I do agree his prices are a bit high from what I remember. I have never sent him a penny, but I remember seeing how much he was charging a few years ago, when the Majors actually were hiring.

It is about you, not Kit

Do not let a few guys with bad vibes make decisions for you about attending a job fair, Kit's or anyone else’s. The Air Inc Job Fair may be all about Kit, but the bottom line it is all about you looking for a job lead. Do a search under Air Inc; there are many testimonials attributing jobs to contacts made at the Job Fair. As I have said before I wish they had these 30 years ago when I left the Navy. Military guys should go a least once it is money well spent.

A few guys with bad vibes that should number around 2600. True you can go to a fair and it may get you a job, maybe at NJA where we have a fairly good new contract to work under - IN SPITE of Darby negotiating against it. How's that for irony - if he had gotten our payscale where he felt it should be then maybe there would be a lot less in line to attend a job fair to work at NJA. DOH!

I've found my flying jobs without paying one cent to Kit Darby, Inc. Networking is a great way to go and much cheaper than supplementing Kit's income.
