TAMPA - JetBlue Airways will discontinue service between Tampa International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport on May 3, a JetBlue spokesman said Monday.
JetBlue will trim the two daily flights it inaugurated Oct. 19 to compete with Continental Airlines on the Tampa-Newark route.
However, it will maintain its service between Tampa and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and between Tampa and Boston, spokesman Brandon Hamm said.
"JetBlue is altering its summer schedule a little bit and shifting aircraft and flights," Hamm said.
JetBlue will add a Newark-San Juan, Puerto Rico, flight May 3; Hamm could not say whether that was why the Tampa-Newark flights were being discontinued.
"It could be a seasonal change" for Tampa, he said.
Passengers with reservations on the Newark-Tampa route after May 2 should contact the airline to make changes.
JetBlue declined to provide details on how full the Tampa-Newark flights have been. The airline lost $42.4 million in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, and said it planned to trim capacity and try to raise fares by $5 to $10 on its Florida routes.
Continental responded to JetBlue's competition at its key Newark hub last fall by adding three daily nonstop Tampa-Newark flights, and currently flies eight on that route.
"We see airlines trying to reduce capacity and raise fares," TIA Director Louis Miller said.
