Can anyone out there post the current FO and Captain pay scales for Jet Blue.

Also, are there any former Skywest pilots at Jet Blue that would like to help a current EMB 120 Captain get an interview?

Thanks in Advance

Here ya go:

First Officer Year 1 Year 2 Year 3
Base Rate $50.96 $56.19
Premium>70 hrs. $76.44 $84.29
JA Pay $17.20 $20.00
JA+Premium $93.64 $104.29

Captain
Base Rate $110.49 $113.00 $115.51
Premium>70 hrs. $165.74 $169.50 $173.27
JA Pay $31.20 $34.00 $36.00
JA+Premium $196.94 $203.50 $209.27

The FO pay increases roughly 8-9% a year after that and the Captains increase is less than %3 a year. Of course, there are quite a few other pay and bennies like company matched 401k, Profit Sharing contribution (last year was 15.5% of your gross) and they pay for a few other things like loss of license insurance, etc. Don't forget the standing 6000 stock options which, depending on who you ask, may be worth millions or nothing someday. Today, mine are worth over $350k so if I was scared, cash them out and be happy. It's free money no matter how to choose to speculate.

Hope this helps.

See Ya.

(Sorry if the fields don't line up, I cut and pasted from Excel.)

JA pay?

Hi JetBlue320,

Thanks for the info! Sorry to ask a stupid question, but if I didn't ask I'd remain. . . well--stupid.

What is "JA Pay"?

Thanks!

Jay

No problem. JA stands for Junior Assignment. In other words, if for some reason they run out of reserve guys and they snatch you on a scheduled day off or remove you from a trip to cover something else, etc, you get an additional $?? on top of the pay you had coming anyway. It is getting more rare these days to see it happen because there are other ways for the company to cover trips. Like what we call RTF (Request to Fly). RTF is like if I am on a day off and I volunteer for RTF then they will call me before they assign a reserve pilot to the trip. We don't purposely use our reserve pilots. If we did, it kinda defeats the whole purpose of reserve. Our whole scheduling package is somewhat different than conventional airlines. It promotes efficiency and most (repeat most) of the Pilots dig it. It boils down to this: if you wanna fly your as% off, you can, and if you want to be a minimal contributor, you can do that too. But, by and large it is safe to say that we have very few minimalists. (if that is a word?).

See ya.

Thanks JB320

JetBlue320,

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds like a good system to me. Probably the only ones who wish it were different would be the guys who commute to reserve (been there, done that for U—not the best quality of life regardless of the reserve system). Fortunately with your growth rate, it shouldn’t last long for anyone at JB!

I’ve got my fingers (toes, and just about every other appendage) crossed that I’ll get to interview with you guys soon! Hope to see you on line one of these days!

Take Care,

Jay

jetblue320- Since NY is expensive where do most pilots live that are based at JFK? I have family in NJ would that be commutable via train? Got my jetblue ballcap in the mail this week still 600 hours shy of the PIC requirement:( Fly safe, Wil

Don't get too used to those pay rates

Those JBLU pay rates quoted above might not be accurate much longer. Sentiment seems to be building pretty fast around the water cooler for a raise, sooner rather than later. Especially given our high profit margins and extraordinary productivity of Blue pilots, the company will find it somewhat difficult putting it off for another year...

Our rates may not look that great next to SWA's....but rest assured we will get there. Just a matter of time. IMHO this is a very common view among BOTH line pilots and management. Stay tuned for further developments....it's gonna be a great ride! :D

Most of the guys that do not live in the NY/NJ area have crashpads, with the majority of them being in Kew Gardens. It's a township within Queens roughly 15 mins from JFK and about 20 mins to LGA. The going rate is about $250 a month. Transportation is abundant. jetBlue has even contracted a shuttle bus that runs from the main area in Kew Gardens to both JFK and our executive offices/training center. I think it's $3. Also plenty of gypsy cabs and busses and subways, etc.

A lot of our pilot are native to the area already and they live in NY, NJ, CT, and VT. We have some guys that commute from Alaska and Hawaii.

Don't forget, we have a base in Long Beach starting October 1st.

Good luck.

Long Beach domicile, fantastic! I'm a Laguna Beach native. Any idea if LB will be senior? Thanks- Wil

Wil

Are you sure you don't meet the PIC requiremnets for B6? I don't think they specify type of airplane. I meet their mins. based on my cessna flying days.

With regard to the PIC requirement, I thought JB wanted 1000 121 PIC. Is this correct? Thanks- Wil

A look at the minimums from their website does not mention anything about 121 PIC time as a requirement. In fact, 121 experience is not mentioned at all.

Minimum Qualification:

FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certification.
1500 hours total time in airplanes (excluded: Helo, Sim, F/E time)1000 hours turbine in airplanes
1000 hours PIC
1000 hours in airplanes over 20,000 pounds (max take off weight)
Recency of flight experience will be considered.
Current FAA Class 1 Medical Certificate
FCC Radio License
Current Passport
Three reference letters from pilots who can personally attest to the candidates flying skills (must bring originals to interview)
Vision corrected to 20/20
Legally authorized to work in the U.S.A.
Able to pass a 10-year security background check and a drug test

Competitive hours can be significantly higher depending on the qualifications of the applicants in our system at any given time. We are currently seeing the following hours in candidates selected to interview:

Between 3,000 and 10,000 hours total time in airplanes
> 2,000 hours turbine PIC in jets
> 2,000 hours in airplanes over 20,000 lbs mtow
Experience with more sophisticated aircraft utilizing EFIS, FMS systems
Experience in the A320 family of airplanes (left or right seat)

How are the guys from Alaska liking the commute? Are they able to do it w/out problems? How about the HI guys?

Do you think we will be seeign JB in ANC anytime in the near future?

I know one guy from AK who bids the trip rig trips and doubles up on those. They happen to be the SEA, ONT, SAN red-eyes. Acutally, as I look at his line for AUG, he does 5 of these back to back and gets about 80 hours in 2 weeks. He's also very senior and can get what he wants.

My buddy from HI just moved to LAS. He just finished his IOE as an F/O. Needless to say he couldn't possibly get that line.

That's as far as my knowledge about AK, HI bidding goes.
Hope that helps. As far as destinations go, I've learned to never make a guess at JB. These guys keep pulling out new tricks. They are much smarter than I.

Happy landings

Hey thanks for the info!
Very informative!

Jet Blue

Hey Jet Blue 320,

How strict is the 20,000lbs. mtow mins? What if you have over 1,000 hrs in turbo-jet aircraft, but some weigh less then 20,000 lbs?

The 20,000 # is non-negotiable. The computer won't look at any numbers unless they're in aircraft over that weight. Way too many applicants can meet those qualifications to set the requirement lower.

Happy landings

All of our minimums are strict. I don't want to sound harsh, but you either meet/exceed them or you don't. My guess is that they will not change any time soon either. Sorry for the inflexibility, but a line has to be drawn somewhere.

Another FYI, JBU just passed having over 7000 current applicants on file that meet or exceed the mins. I just saw the list of guys/gals for the Sept. 10th interviews and they were averaging 7000+ hours in jets well over 20K and overall, a pretty highly qualified group. Sorry if I am bursting bubbles.

And thx jointops...............

Good luck.

Wow, over 7,000 apps. and to think I had a chance! Thanks for all the info from both of you, guess I'll have to put some weight on to meet the mtow mins!

Please, don't think I am implying that you do not have a chance, because I am not. Keep plugging away at getting quality flight time and keep the feelers out for sure.

See ya

I just had a good friend of mine get an interview call.

He is a 7000-8000 hour pilot with 5 types and an MBA. Currently flying corporate(his background), former Delta furloughed pilot, that applied approx 3 months ago.

Just a couple of quick questions that he was asking me. I've been out of it for a little while (new baby keeping me busy)

Is the gouge on the web good?
What is the time to upgrade running?
What about the future, based upon next years deliveries?
How many folks do they call per month and how many do they hire?
Are they still hiring for the A320 only?
Or are they starting to train on the EMB 190?

Thanks in advance.

Tell your buddy the gouge is indeed good for the interview. Get your buddy to do some searches on this site for info about the EMB, etc. He'll come much more informed about our company, the press releases, background posts related to the hiring process, etc. He'll go into the interview much more relaxed if he's got a good handle on these topics.

Upgrade now is running around 13-14 months.

We interview anywhere from 65-85 candidates.
Since we don't interview every month, that's how many get called for the upcoming interview. Not a monthly quota.
Speaking of quotas, we hire as many of those interviewees that pass the interview process. That way no one competes against the other candidates.
The numbers run about 70-80% of those that interview get passed into Phase II. Of those about 85% get the job offer.

Since the EMB won't be on the property until 2005, we're only hiring for the Bus.

Based off of our hiring for this year and the growth, I'm guessing we will hire almost 300 pilots next year. Dean hasn't yet discussed those numbers with us.
We'll be concentrating on upgrade training in Nov and Dec (meaning no initial classes for Nov and Dec), so we're putting through higher numbers of initial training in Sep and Oct. I think Dean said 2 classes of 18 each for each month to compensate for the holiday schedules.

Hope this helps and happy landings
