It's not deadheading, it's non-revving. Deadhead is a term with specific meaning and limitations.

It is somewhat hard to believe that an ATP rated pilot with the experience you have would not understand what deadheading is.....

Please see above post and if you happen by a copy of the FAR's you might also find some interesting reading. Travel on you own for your own intentions and purposes is called "commuting" in the industry. Travel assigned by the company "not local in nature", is part of a duty period, can not be counted as rest and is something that keeps the duty day meter running.

Common sense? Are you sure you wanted to question common sense when in fact it is FAR's that you are trying to break and breach?
