Notice that almost all the aircraft that reported Severe are of the smaller size. (With the exception of the E145 that reported severe) To them It may have been severe, but to soemting that weighed more it could of been Moderate.

The E145 was out of Dayton, there was a lot of T-storms and rain around the CVG DAY area,so it may not be too far fetched, but i think it is really unlikely. I flew into CVG yesterday didn't get anyting more than Light, to the occasional Moderate bump, there was some TS, but they were easy to get around.
 
It's pretty simple:

Light rattles stuff around
Moderate moves stuff around
Severe throws stuff around
Extreme throws the airplane around

You're right, it is very simple...I just wish everyone would print this out and put it in their back pocket so they never forget.
