I also lived in Colombia from 1970 to 1980 and it's a beautiful country that needs to be saved from self destruction.
I agree with with Snakum, a ground war there would be another Vietnam.
Mar asked why we should do anything. After 9-11, Bush declared war on terrorsim. The FARC and drug lord are terrorist. In 1993, an Avianca airplane was blown up in flight to kill one government official. Over 90 people were killed. That's terrorism!

Short retorts

Timebuilder: Don't'cha think you're blaming them for our coke habit?

Turbo: Thanks for the response. See my answer to Lumax below.

Lumax: You wrote, "Bush declared war on terrorsim. The FARC and drug lord are terrorist..."

Well this is what I'm talking about.

Ok, they're terrorists. There are a lot more terrorists out there too. Are we gonna tackle every single one.

Are we gonna take care of Chiapas? Tibet? The Congo? Ivory Coast? Ireland? Chechnya?

My parting shot: Invest in America first!

By the way, no we shouldn't invade Cuba, because Kennedy made a deal that we wouldn't to get the nukes out of Cuba. We should stick by that.

I'm sick (really sickened) of this country bleeding billions of dollars into other third-rate countries that should just duke it out on their own.

Agreed. That is one reason that I always admired Jesse Helms for having the guts to call em like he saw em when it came to foreign aid. I don't agree with him on very many things (I'm a psuedo-tree hugger :D ), but he was willing to take a stand and sometimes that's enough.

As long as there are people who want to fill their head with chemicals, someone will be able to supply it. All the drug enforcement in the world isn't going to change that. We're locking up millions of non-violent offenders every year for what amounts to mere drug use (I'm not talking about those who rob and kill for habits) and that's just more money down the drain. So why don't we just legalize it ALL and tax the h@ll out of it. Everyone else, from farmers in Colombia to the horridly inept social worker-shrinks at the rehab clinics is making money off it ... why not the government.

Because of the incredible costs involved.

1) Human misery

2) Economic loss (missed work, accidents, crime)

3) The cultural cancer of accepting the taking of a drug to produce individual pleasure instead of the work ethic of accomplishment.

Devil's advocate

Not wanting to put words in Snakum's mouth, but...

...you mean like Tobacco and Alcohol?

Yeah man, legalize it and tax it.

We're gonna need another source of revenue when the Republicrats approve another tax cut.

"Here's an idea: Let's have two simultaneous military campaigns and a third one on the horizon and then let's cut taxes too. I don't know how we're gonna pay for it--let's just pass on the debt anyway..."
