I use the 3g function all the time. AT&T's $15 plan is plenty for me between wifi, but i can't imagine not having the GPS capability that you only get with 3g. From driving directions, radar/wx where exactly where I am, and whatever enhancements are made with xm/bluetooth for getting stuff in the air. I'd go for 3g.

Also, 16 gig seems to be way more than enough. I've got full Jepps, foreflight, all kinds of cool apps, etc. And still have something like 12gig left free.

I did today. The big draw back with Verizon, their interface is an external bluetooth unit and is only good for 4hrs before needing charged.

The good thing it's a wireless hot-spot for up to 5 devices.

I HATE AT&T and would hate to have to use them for my 3G ipad.

Verizon's data paakges didn't suit my needs. Each of their 3g packages are more money than AT&T for more data than I would use. I have had no issues with the service at this point, either. AT&T has a $15 package, Verizon's cheapest is more like $25.
 
Anyone mount an iPad in a Citation? Would love to get it between the yoke somehow...

Also everyone who uses an ipad should get the 'LogMeIn' app... It is $30 bucks and lets you access all of your computer's from your iPad... Freakin' awesome!!

PS - a 16GB would be just fine for most users.... We have 3G 32GB iPad's however.

Just Got my ipad. Actually Verizon's MyFi IS the way to go. The external MyFi unit is 10 times better then ATT&T internal unit and here's why; the unit is an external hot spot so you only need to buy a WiFi ipad. The MyFi can handle up to 5 ipad/computers therefore all you need is 1 unit for both ipads in the cockpit. This saves money by not having to buy the 3g ipads (the myFi costs the $150, the same as 1 upgraded ipad to 3g). Verizon's cheapest plan is $20 vs AT&T's $15, but Verizon's is 1G vs AT&T's 250M. With AT&T, you can only run 1 ipad per subscription, with Verizon, up to 5 per.

I'm going to place a strip of hooked side velcro to the back of the MyFi and stick it the bulkhead wall behind the Copilot's seat and plug it into the ac outlet we have there. Get in the airplane, power it up, turn on the MyFi and I'm connected.

The MiFi is only cell service right, no GPS capabilities? How will you use that in the cockpit?

You are correct, MyFi is cell phone service as is 3g. You can't use it in flight but most use it on the gound during preflight to file/update flight plans, check WX, download charts, etc, while remaining in the cockpit.
 
The only problem i see with that solution is that the 3G ipad has GPS, even if you don't buy a 3G plan. The wifi only ipads lack the GPS which is already very important to me, and in the cockpit will become more and more valuable as the industry adopts the ipad. I utilize the GPS function of the ipad daily.
 
Whoa, I that's true, I need to return this thing. I haven't tried the GPS function yet but if I can't recieve it, I can't use verizon.

Why can't you use Verizon? Some say the 3G iPad's gps works, others say it's useless with heated windshields. Foreflight states that the built-in receiver isn't reliable enough and suggests using a BT, external GPS such as Bad Elf. Going with ATT would leave you one less box to carry, but don't be surprised to see the soon-to-be-released iPad 2 with CDMA built in. I'm holding out for that model as it should have twice the memory at the same price point.

What is CDMA? is that the built in 3g like AT&T"s units? Also what is the release date for the ipad 2?

It's the format a cellular carrier uses. ATT is GSM and Verizon is CDMA, thus why you can't use a Verizon phone on an ATT network. The 3G models have only GSM.

The rumor on ipad2 is announcement Feb 1 with deliveries a few weeks after that. They generally never come down in base model price and the competing tablets are proving to be little threat so I doubt that pattern will change.

I may now wait to see. Also maybe the best bet is to find an external GPS unit. The only thing is that I fly a Challenger with electriclly heated windscreens. I need to find one that is strong enough to work. Someone mentioned the
sirf III.
Anyone with any other suggestions?
 
Any feedback on WingX? Looks like they have the ability to Geo-reference on appoach charts.
