I've heard of a bluetooth for the iPad whichs allows GPS to work inflight, you might be able to get uplinked weather through it, although I think you have to have the 3G plan. Call the foreflight folks, they're very nice and might able to point you in the right direction.

We just purchased an iPad w/3g for our Citation. Does anyone know a way to get radar images enroute? Like the Garmin 696. I was under the impression that it would receive images over the GPS.

The GPS receiver cannot receive XM satellite data.

I believe multiple solutions are in the works for a Q1'11 rollout, but I believe I've read somewhere if you "hack" your iPad you can make a bluetooth WxWorx box work with it (it otherwise won't).

I'm intersted in the same thing. Would like weather w/gps input on IPad. Also, is it possible to use bluetooth GPS with Jepps, using Ipad?

If I have internet on board could I weather with GPS?

I'm currently using the Fujitsu 1630's with Sirrus Weather and would like something more user friendly.

Guys, this is the only iPad solution I'm aware of (so far) for wx in the cockpit:

Pros: Its ADS-B, so the unlike XM the data is free, and no other ADS-B in/out equipment is required to receive weather.

Cons: you have to buy a $1K+ receiver from the guys above to get it. However, it looks like a pretty interesting setup.

I haven't tried it out myself yet, but did talk to the developers at OSH this year. I've been using an iPad since May for my charts (using SkyCharts Pro - cheaper than ForeFlight) and love it..and yeah, a weather link would make it complete.

I also bought an external GPS for the 'pad (Bad Elf, $99 at amazon) which is apple supported and plugs right in; works great - I have the wifi only ipad so no built-in GPS

That does look like a nice solution. Box is sort of big and i take it that long antenna needs to be in view as well as the Gps antenna. Not quite ideal as you have that box up on your dash, and not acceptable at all in a biz jet. However, it appears the box-antenna is coaxial, so should be easy enough to attach it via an extension, and simply put the box in a seat or side pocket.

Ahhh...just saw they offer the remote stick-on ADS-B antenna.....

I use Foreflight, we have Wifi in the airplane and real time weather works great. The GPS signal wont work but its easy enough to plug in a waypoint or VOR near your location to give you a position.

Has anyone tried Avilution with Andriod 2.1? Supposedly it can download weather, has VFR/IFR enroute charts and IAPs.

I'm going to give it a try on my wife's android when I get home. May have to go buy an Android tablet if it works. BTW, the subscription is supposed to be about $6 a month.

I'm asking because I'm trying to make a decision between Ipad's with moble devices or EFB's with hard wired power/gps/wx. Would love not to spend $20-30k for hard wired.

King Air 350 and on the glare shield, copilot's side...kind of low and to the right. Nothing fancy, just plopped it up there and it works fine every time. This is an EFB with a standard usb type receiver.

In full disclosure, its not mine but a friends that I have flown with a few times.

Our dept got 16GB ones..not even cose to full with many manuals, etc on it.

The only thing that will fill up an iPad is movies and a ton of music. I use netflix mostly so I dont even store movies....and keep all music on iphone..YMMV.

I also have yet to use the 3G function, and cant imagine I ever will. Wifi is everywhere, and where its not I certainly don't worry that much to use a slow 3G connection. Might be handy if you dont have a smartphone...but who dosen't anymore I suppose.

Someone once told me that 3G is handy to look at real radar when sitting in the plane waiting to start. I usually just look outside. Flow control and wx radar take care of the rest...again YMMV.

Either way its a great way to keep your Jepps updated...

I use the 3g function all the time. AT&T's $15 plan is plenty for me between wifi, but i can't imagine not having the GPS capability that you only get with 3g. From driving directions, radar/wx where exactly where I am, and whatever enhancements are made with xm/bluetooth for getting stuff in the air. I'd go for 3g.

Also, 16 gig seems to be way more than enough. I've got full Jepps, foreflight, all kinds of cool apps, etc. And still have something like 12gig left free.

I did today. The big draw back with Verizon, their interface is an external bluetooth unit and is only good for 4hrs before needing charged.

The good thing it's a wireless hot-spot for up to 5 devices.

I HATE AT&T and would hate to have to use them for my 3G ipad.

Verizon's data paakges didn't suit my needs. Each of their 3g packages are more money than AT&T for more data than I would use. I have had no issues with the service at this point, either. AT&T has a $15 package, Verizon's cheapest is more like $25.

Also everyone who uses an ipad should get the 'LogMeIn' app... It is $30 bucks and lets you access all of your computer's from your iPad... Freakin' awesome!!

PS - a 16GB would be just fine for most users.... We have 3G 32GB iPad's however.

Just Got my ipad. Actually Verizon's MyFi IS the way to go. The external MyFi unit is 10 times better then ATT&T internal unit and here's why; the unit is an external hot spot so you only need to buy a WiFi ipad. The MyFi can handle up to 5 ipad/computers therefore all you need is 1 unit for both ipads in the cockpit. This saves money by not having to buy the 3g ipads (the myFi costs the $150, the same as 1 upgraded ipad to 3g). Verizon's cheapest plan is $20 vs AT&T's $15, but Verizon's is 1G vs AT&T's 250M. With AT&T, you can only run 1 ipad per subscription, with Verizon, up to 5 per.

I'm going to place a strip of hooked side velcro to the back of the MyFi and stick it the bulkhead wall behind the Copilot's seat and plug it into the ac outlet we have there. Get in the airplane, power it up, turn on the MyFi and I'm connected.

The MiFi is only cell service right, no GPS capabilities? How will you use that in the cockpit?
