I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me. I'm a turboprop captain at a large regional. I enjoy my job, but lately I've been looking to see what else is out there for a single young man. I am looking to move on to a job where I can have some fun and see some interesting places. I've traveled extensively since I was very young, and I think it would be a blast to do it flying the Boeing 747. Hence, my interest in Kalitta. I have the following questions.

  • How do you Kalitta Air pilots like the maintenance over there?
  • How do you like the management?
  • Do you know of many former regional airline pilots being hired there? As an aside, I have a little over 900 hours of SIC jet. My other qualifications in a nutshell are on my profile.
  • Where does most of KA's business come from?
  • Could someone explain the basing system over there?
  • Does Kalitta Air have a probationary system for new pilots?
I've done some searches on Kalitta on the board, and I appreciate the information shared by those who've responded, and who will respond. I'm single and I don't mind being away from home at all. Thanks for any responses, private or on the board.

  • How do you Kalitta Air pilots like the maintenance over there? No comment yet...
  • How do you like the management? The people I've met seem cool. But I dont have much experience at the company yet.
  • Do you know of many former regional airline pilots being hired there? As an aside, I have a little over 900 hours of SIC jet. My other qualifications in a nutshell are on my profile. I think they hired one guy that only had turbo-prop experience but he did have a few thousand hours PIC. Are you a captain?
  • Where does most of KA's business come from? ALL over... we have one mail contract for the soldiers in the sandbox but there are tons of people banging on our doors wondering when that will end so they can use the planes we have commited to that.
  • Could someone explain the basing system over there? Right now technically everyones based in YIP (detroit) but people live literally all over the world. After the new contract goes through we will all be homebased.
  • Does Kalitta Air have a probationary system for new pilots? yep, one year.

XFr8dog,

Thanks for your response. I am a captain on the ATR-72. I've also been a captain on the EMB-120. I have about 740 hours of turboprop PIC. It's not much, but I was displaced out of the left seat once.
Someone mentioned that going up to KYIP and walking in a resume might be fruitful. I do have a few friends up that way I've been meaning to visit. What do you think?

Did you just show up or did you call first? Is Richard Hagquist still chief pilot over there?

That is what I would like to know, but most companies don't like phone calls from prospective employees.
And yes, Richard Hagquist is still the CP.

Jump Seat

I've checked out the teamsters site on Kalitta Air's jump seats and my question is do they have any benefits for Kalitta pilot's family members or spouses. Can family ride on Kalitta planes? Does Kalitta have benefits with othere airlines that allow spouses to ride on say, southwest or others?

thanks for the info

any new update on the contract?

Jumpseat for family you say.Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Sorry, couldn't help myself. ;)

thanks for that.

Sorry Shieki. I couldn't help myself. There's NO bennie's at Kalitta !!!!! We're lucky to ride our own jumpseats and if the company could they would take that from us too!! ;)

Seat lock at Kalitta???

I attended the job fair in MIA and met with a training Capt from Kalitta and as he reviewed my resume he suggested the best way to get offered a interview/job was to get my FE written. I would not mind it however I heard a rumour of a seat lock for FE's of one year is that true? I have alot of time just no jet time and not much T-PIC time.

Thanks in advance

Why would anyone wear a suit and tie when Connie dosn't even own one!!!!! As far as an FE ticket goes....I can't think of one crewmember (senior that is) that wants to see FE's/2nd officer in the seat at all, Only PFE's !!!! I would not want to be in the back seat as an FE/2nd officer with this company. Trust me, there's more in life than going through that kind of punishment. As far as a seat lock, you may be right USA_ Av8r that's if there hiring FE's/2nd officer's. If it's true the good thing is the way thing's are going here, after a year in the FE seat you'll be a 747 Captain a week or two after you upgrade. Now isn't that a Scary thought.

How is the schedule you ask? I try not to look at it if I don't have too. I just get dissapointed. I have come to realize I will never fly my line and will have to kick and sream to get home on time for my days off!!!!!

Yeah, what he said ^

The lines are there because in the last contract it said that known flying will be published. OK, so they publish it. All you can count on is that you'll be working on your days "on".

I haven't had days off yet personally so I dont know about kicking and screaming to get home... I know you have to be pretty vocal or they'll forget about you. I've heard as long as you give them 24hours or so notice they'll get you home if thats what you want.

But who would want that??? Amsterdam rules!:)

If you guys are still on Probation I feel for you BUT...if your not on probation and are staying out on your days off BY CHOICE you are only hurting yourself and everyone else. As long as Connie gets away with this.. things will never change.

You hear that??? Stop flying on your days off! I want time and a half to come back!!!

I have to agree with Nosewheel - if you are flying more than 17 days a month, it's by your own choice. I've been here a year and only flown on days off by my choice (and that was only by a few hours).

Oh, and if you're showing up with a resume, dress nicely. You're still the one looking for a job - if you come in shorts and a T-shirt (although not this week because it's snowing!) you look like you think the job is a joke.

Could someone please post a typical new hire schedule? How many hours of pay can you expect, if QOL is desired? How tough is it to commute and have a family life, as compared to a regional? Is there alot of attrition? To where? It looks like upgrades are quick, is it due to attrition or growth. Thanks in advance.

First of all I'm not an overtime ho! I don't fly on my days off. And if I here one more person say the probation word to me again!!!! I don't know what I will do!!!! Probation is not a tool for the company to use to abuse a new hire employee. It should never be used to force some into days off our do things that are in direct violation of the contract. And further more I proby should never have to worry about being fired without cause. Especially when he is paying dues and gets no representaion. What a farking joke this place is. I never heard of probation being more than six months either. But it goes to show if you beat a group of people down for long enough they will start to believe they deserve it. The teamsters are ripping us off. They are completly worthless!!!! The new contract will be a bad deal. But what does it matter if no one forces the company to follw it anyway?

Ok I fell better now!:)
