I like when Captains brief the Instrument Missed procedure when you're shooting the visual into ATL. Because KATL has always been known to send you to fricken Tempo when you go around on the visual.

They won't even send you to Tempo in instrument conditions. Has anyone ever flown a published missed? I can't ever see a need for it unless it was for terrain/airspace avoidance or lost comms

A captain I was flying with cracked me up when he said in his brief for an ils "we will head to conni and we'll be the first to ever hold there. Its probably true. Anyway, make sure you zero out the the xponder once at the gate.

...you won't hear it from this captain..but I hear it from plenty of FOs....
because they have no piloting skills or knowledge and those clowns over at FSI pound into their heads that they have to brief every nitnoid little thing on the plate. I don't give a damn that there is a MALSIF II lighting system for a firggin' approach (don't even understand what that is!)... there will be some lights, 'nough said (if you even have to say that..which you don't).

BTW, you won't fall out of the air if you do 180kts at flaps 0 either...just sayin'...and quit "jokeying" the dang power levers. pick a power that holds the speed you need and "tweak" it. You're giving everybody friggin' whiplash!......

wow! sorry, it was a long 3 day this week...

carry on...

No, you won't fall out of the sky at 180 kts and flaps 0, but flying around at 10 degrees nose up in straight and level flight just doesn't feel right.

Unless you're trying to do a Cat II approach to a runway that doesn't have them... like all the westbound runways in ATL. Your ops specs don't allow Cat II unless you have them.

"This airplane, that runway. Any question, comments, or insults will not be answered, entertained, or tolerated".

Just venting.

I'll live.

Medeco,
I'm with you 100%. Why do guys still think they're briefing someone who is on new-hire IOE? I too can not stand that "Any questions"?
Yeah, here's a question, do you lack that much confidence in yourself?

And quit putting your stupid-ass lunch bag/laptop case in the middle of the cockpit floor, next time I'm gonna stomp on it on purpose.

This is not entirely true. I have done many briefings for the visual into ATL where I just brief the frequencies, our gate and verify the speeds are set. Several times the Captain, as if to make a point, takes it upon himself (which he has every right to) to start reading out the missed approach procedure, what kind of approach lighting there is at the airport, and all the obstacles around the airport we've flown in and out of since we began working at ASA---on a visual.

On a visual or an instrument, into ATL, your Missed App. Proc is going to be runway heading to 10K. On the visual into ATL I used to typically set 10K when I turned the AP off, because I figured if we had to go missed, 10K is likely where we'd end up. Then I had a few captains ask incredulously why we'd set 10 in the window and then they'd set 4K.

To each their own. But I wouldn't be quick to say the FOs who brief and set the instrument missed on a visual are doing so because they have "no piloting skills". More likely than not, they have the common sense, but have been shaped by all the different Captains they've been flying with.

Maybe "any questions?" is just a good way to say "I'm done with my brief"? I know I don't expect any questions, but I would like to let the FO know I am done and let's get on with the checklist please. People get worked up about the dumbest things. Maybe this should go in the #1 most stressful job thread.

I like the Captains that sit down with the FA in the back, pull out the tray table, lay the release on it and proceed with a thorough briefing. "Its been a while since we've gone over security so lets review that as well"

So since nobody seems to transfer the controls while briefing on the line, how come everybody seems to do it in the sims or on line checks?

If a highway patrol is cruising next to me down the highway, I will be driving the speed limit.

BINGO! I have yet to meet a "by the book" pilot who admits that they drive 55 MPH on 75 or 85 thru ATL....

So, opening up the 'discussion' to questions after the brief is a sign of lack of confidence in one's abilities? It seems the friends and acquaintances I've lost over the years tend NOT to be the ones that "lacked confidence".

So what other parts of the FOM and OM do you not agree with and choose not to follow?

Do you drive 55 MPH on 85 or 75 thru ATL?...or is that "different"?

Personally, I think these briefing increase the odds of an altitude bust on arrival into ATL and more distracting than anything else....We have gone WAY overboard on the briefings.....

Because they have common sense...

Common sense is not allowed anymore with "recipe flying"....We must have a procedure for everything we do and there is no room to simply use common sense....

Apples and oranges. I own my car and do not get paid to operate it. I also do not operate a taxi service out of it.

And you are right that briefing increases the odds of busting an altitude. Which is why our manuals state that 1. you should brief at cruise, and 2. there should always be one person whose job it is to fly the airplane (hence transferring the controls).

Thank you for making my point for me.

I once pushed execute on the FMS below 10000. That was before the ASAP program. That day still haunts me

Maybe someday you can put the incident in the past....until then, I hope you find peace in your life.

I don't know, how many times have you broken sterile cockpit? Ever read non-approved material in the cockpit? Put on the O2 mask every single time the FO leaves the cockpit? Have you ever slid your seat back in flight when it's your leg?

Do you always keep your high horse in that glass house of yours?
