I come for advice

I've been lurking on the regional boards, I've posted questions everywhere. This question HAS been posted before. Is there a clear answer....let us find out.

If one comes from GLA with 1000-1500 PIC TURBO PROP time does he stand a chance of getting hired at SWA/UPS/FEDEX etc. Obviously i'm told two different things. Yes and No. Guys at GLA left seat say yes guys at COEX/CHQ etc etc sitting right seat say no. Does it even matter? :-*

A chance? Yes, but in this environment the call for the interview will be a long time coming. Keep building turbine PIC. Good luck.

PIC is PIC. majors don't care where it comes from. once your online it might be a different story putting up with crew members after they find out you did PFT. go out and pay your dues, don't pay for your job...just my thought after 4 years of flight instructing, 1 year of aerial surveying and 6 years at a commuter airline...

Yes, my question is hypothetical in nature. Looking far down the road. GLA and upgrade with PIC turbine.....go to CHQ or Mesaba or something like that and wait for the upgrade into a jet. My sights are set far and i'm just contemplating, i understand i have a ways to go, even before a regional will look at me.

Thank you

I agree on the not PFT part, but I would go where ever you can get your turbine PIC the fastest. oh yeah, network your butt off, that is what will get you a job.

Is GLA Gulfstream or Great Lakes?

If you want to get to the majors as fast as you can get the Turbine PIC ASAP as well as total time up. However one way to look at it is like this. With your time now it will be 5 years of building time just to get your total time up. Do you really want to sit at GLA for 5 years. Sometimes you have to live life a little in the quest for the prize.

My opinion is go to a place that if/when the music stops you don't mind working at without cutting your own throat. My other opinion which probably has little value to you is to go do something else. Be successful...don't be a pilot. :)

Go for maximum PIC. Look at everybody's requirements. They don't want jet copilot, they want turbine PIC. I have 12k TT, 5000 737 fo, but only 850 turbine pic. I'm not qualified for jack. Go fly the pi$$ out of the 1900 for a couple years, suck up the crappy lifestyle, it's a means to an end. Who cares, we'll all be flying rjs in ten years anyway.

GLA Is Great Lakes. Also what is PFT?

PFT= Pay For Training

Examples Tab Express Gulfstream (GIA)

Any job that states you will have a job here for ONLY $19,000

Why should you PAY for a job???????/ In the aviation world, you WILL be looked down upon if you do that...........just look at PCL_128 he went to Gulfstream and he's a tool! Go out and work for it, flight instruct, banner tow, anything but PAY to be right seat in a beech1900 like gulfstream

Upgrade is quick and sure at GLA. I hate to say it, but they may be the fastest way to a good job. Bite the bullet now, make it fun, enjoy it. Think of it this way: Every year you sit as an RJ FO somewhere else is a year you've lost in your quest (no offense to the RJ FO's out there!). BE1900 time is well respected - no autopilot, always down in the sh!t, remote destinations. All good stuff in building character. JMHO

For excellent PIC turbine time I would also recommend freight in a turboprop. You will make more money in freight than at GLA, but you won't build time as fast. You still should manage around 600-800 hrs a year though. I averaged 720 for 2.5 years flying Metroliners. I had a ball doing it too. It's all attitude, and lack of intelligence ;)

Great Lakes is a great place to go if you want your PIC and then get the hell out of there. I've known some great guys/gals who went there and got their PIC and went on to all the airlines. Not a single person liked it there, in fact they all hated it, but they got their PIC quickly (upgrade less than 10 months). Just my 2 cents..Turbine PIC is Turbine PIC....it doesn't seem like jet time is much better..

Gulfstream International Airlines has nothing to do with TAB Express.

GIA does not claim to give you a job $19,000. The program is through Gulfstream Training Academy and all they sell is training which includes 250 hours at the airline (GIA), then you get an interview with GIA or NW Airlink (pinacle).
You are never promissed a job and having been a GIA check airman for 4 years, I have seen many captains go from there to all majors you can think of in the US.
I myself work at AirTran now and never heard anything against me in the cockpit.

Go for PIC (at least a 1000)and then jet time. I have a couple friends with Airbus and B727 SIC time who were not able to get a job during the hiring peak of 99 and worse nowadays...

your the same..its paying for training.... GIA=Tab Express Sh!tty comparison isn't it? :)you give the company $19,000 for what ??? 250 hours SIC in a B-1900 OH WHERE DO I SIGN UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That doesn't amount to squat!

Anyone with a half of a brain knows that instead of giving any company $19,000 dollars (and then not even a guarannteed job) you can take that money and:

1. Buy multiengine time (split the time with someone) and build your hours up that way.
2. Use that money to get your CFI, CFII, MEI (doesn't cost a lot) and instruct.
3. Get your Tail endorsment and banner tow.

Whatever.... I think for the quickest time and if you have the money.....find somone to split multiengine time with you...get PIC time, that's what companies want to see. Don't be scamed into PFT Just my $.02 cents

PM me if you have any other questions.... Good Luck

RJ F/O time is worthless. If you do go to an RJ operator you will still be sitting right seat in that RJ while the CA from GLA is interviewing at FedEx, SWA, etc. No offense to the RJ F/O's meant. I was one for two years and during that time I was not called for one interview. Shortly after upgrading to CA, I started to get calls. Go for the quick upgrade for TPIC.
