A good friend of mine has an interview in two weeks, and he does not have a 737 type.

Nice Harley....!

In the past, a B-737 type was required to get an interview.
Then the deal changed a few years ago:

Ya Interview and IF hired, ya get a type before class.

Pretty straight forward requirements and sort of neat:
Don't matter what sex or skin ya got, just show up with a type and no excuses.

Type or No type does it matter? The DB is turning down over 50% (some say its closer to 70%) of the applicants. $7,000 for a type on a 50% turn down rate Vegas would love us pilots!

Xdriver:

Well, if ya don't have to get a type for the interview, then there is nothing to loose...And no gamble..?

WN doesn't hire based on minority status. I know two folks that were turned down recently, one who shoulda been and one who should not have been(my opinion).

Zero!

NOBODY gets hired without the type. Lots of folks go through the process and are eligible to be hired before they have the type, but nobody gets "HIRED" without the type. Remember, you aren't "hired" until you are sitting in class with a seniority number and drawing a paycheck.

Get the type.

Anais Nin...really? I though you were dead. Not before some pretty interesting publishing, however.

If you are a gal...well...thats a ballsy moniker and good on ya'. If you are a dude...well...thats a bit warped.

I went to a career fair hosted by Higher Power down in Virginia Beach VA about 3 weeks ago. Most of the question and answer session was handled by a SW recruiter and she said that 95% of the people getting called for the interview already have a type.

Getonit,

95% is a pretty good gouge. I know two folks personally who've gotten the 'let's continue' call. I think the percentage will fall as typed candidates get their interviews. IF you get an interview, the fact that you have a type or not doesn't matter to the interviewer. He/she will treat each the same.

Cheers

Interviewed without the Type

Pilot 1704,
First time poster here. Just wanted you to know that I was interviewed without my Type rating, continued in the process, got my Type rating, and by my calculations (which could be wrong...I often am) I'm ~40th in the pool. Bottom Line--it is possible to get interviewed before you have the Type, if you get the "continue in the process" call you'll be told you have 6 months from that time to get your Type rating to be put into the "pool". Three out of the 11 from my interview group did not have their Types...all 3 of us were asked to continue in the process and told to get our Types within 6 months and a total of 8 of us got called after the DB to continue. Here's my story for reference:

Total Hours: 3,639 Total Turbine Time: 2,995

Pilot in Command: 3,004 Time last 36 months: 1,034

Jet/Turboprop PIC: 2,495 IP/Evaluator Time: 1,799

Initially applied to SWA on paper: Oct 2002
Applied on-line: March 9th, 2004
Interviewed: April 22nd, 2004
Six letters of recommendation--none from SWA pilots.
Four SWA pilots did on-line recs for me...but not very strong connections.
Contacts from last 5 years called the next week
Decision Board May 5th
Next week: Called by PD and told I'd been selected to "continue in the process". They told me the Lifeguard said the water was warm, but first I'd have to pass the "Whiz Quiz", background check, and get my Type rating within the next 6 months.
Type rating completed on June 20th at Flight Training International in Denver, CO--cheapest Type in the country at $6,000...highly recommended.
21 June: faxed a copy of my temporary airmen's cert into Kim. Called to verifly she got it and was told I was ~80 in the pool at that time.

When does the lifeguard call you out of the pool? If you had your Type before the interview, it's the date of your interview. If you got your Type after your interview (like me), it's the date of your Type rating. So the folks that interviewed with me on 22 April that had their Types have been called for the 2 Aug class, whereas I'll hopefully get a class in October at the end of the May interviewees who already had their Types (if predictions of the break the rest of the month of August and all of Sept hold true...to be determined).

One last note on what I think you're looking for--To Type or not to Type, that is the question. If I was a betting man in Vegas (which I often have been), I'd play the odds and get my Type as quick and cheap as I could (i.e. FTI in Denver). I had my Type rating class scheduled to start on 21 June and finish July 3rd before I was ever called for an interview. I feel totally blessed to have been one of the few selected to interivew this early without a Type rating and to hopefully soon be officially hired. I moved my Type class up to the first date available after the call.

In sum, I'd get the Type and consider yourself blessed and lucky if you get interviewed before you've completed it. Worst case scenario is you don't make it this time, wait a year, and then apply again. A senior SWA Capt told me they often hire folks on their 2nd or 3rd interview (it took his brother-in-law until his 4th interview to get hired)...having a Type and coming back again and again shows you have the no-kiddin, burning desire to be part of the team.

Good luck...apologies on the dissertation, but I hope it helps with your decision process.

Speed,

Great post...lots of good info! Glad to hear you got the call and it looks like class might be right around the corner for you. Your post was the first I heard of the PD mentioning some sort of pool (I got the impression they were trying not to use that word if you continue the process). It's nice to know that they are trying to be up front with you as much as possible.

Good luck with everything and thanks again!

Myself and two others

When I was at Higher Power getting my B737 Type (AFTER I was interviewed), myself and 2 others were hired by SWA. None of us had B737 types.

Semantics

Mick: It is the definition of the word "hired" that I am disputing, although I like your definition better, because if it were correct I would call SWA for the over 2 years of back pay they would owe me.

Congratulations on getting the conditional job offer, but again, until you are sitting in class with a seniority number and drawing a paycheck, you haven't been "hired".

You never know when hiring will stop and you won't be able to feed your family with the conditional job offer letter. You will be able to feed your family after you are "hired" and you start receiving a paycheck.

Again, congrats on making with SWA.
