Interviewed without the Type
Pilot 1704,
First time poster here. Just wanted you to know that I was interviewed without my Type rating, continued in the process, got my Type rating, and by my calculations (which could be wrong...I often am) I'm ~40th in the pool. Bottom Line--it is possible to get interviewed before you have the Type, if you get the "continue in the process" call you'll be told you have 6 months from that time to get your Type rating to be put into the "pool". Three out of the 11 from my interview group did not have their Types...all 3 of us were asked to continue in the process and told to get our Types within 6 months and a total of 8 of us got called after the DB to continue. Here's my story for reference:
Total Hours: 3,639 Total Turbine Time: 2,995
Pilot in Command: 3,004 Time last 36 months: 1,034
Jet/Turboprop PIC: 2,495 IP/Evaluator Time: 1,799
Initially applied to SWA on paper: Oct 2002
Applied on-line: March 9th, 2004
Interviewed: April 22nd, 2004
Six letters of recommendation--none from SWA pilots.
Four SWA pilots did on-line recs for me...but not very strong connections.
Contacts from last 5 years called the next week
Decision Board May 5th
Next week: Called by PD and told I'd been selected to "continue in the process". They told me the Lifeguard said the water was warm, but first I'd have to pass the "Whiz Quiz", background check, and get my Type rating within the next 6 months.
Type rating completed on June 20th at Flight Training International in Denver, CO--cheapest Type in the country at $6,000...highly recommended.
21 June: faxed a copy of my temporary airmen's cert into Kim. Called to verifly she got it and was told I was ~80 in the pool at that time.
When does the lifeguard call you out of the pool? If you had your Type before the interview, it's the date of your interview. If you got your Type after your interview (like me), it's the date of your Type rating. So the folks that interviewed with me on 22 April that had their Types have been called for the 2 Aug class, whereas I'll hopefully get a class in October at the end of the May interviewees who already had their Types (if predictions of the break the rest of the month of August and all of Sept hold true...to be determined).
One last note on what I think you're looking for--To Type or not to Type, that is the question. If I was a betting man in Vegas (which I often have been), I'd play the odds and get my Type as quick and cheap as I could (i.e. FTI in Denver). I had my Type rating class scheduled to start on 21 June and finish July 3rd before I was ever called for an interview. I feel totally blessed to have been one of the few selected to interivew this early without a Type rating and to hopefully soon be officially hired. I moved my Type class up to the first date available after the call.
In sum, I'd get the Type and consider yourself blessed and lucky if you get interviewed before you've completed it. Worst case scenario is you don't make it this time, wait a year, and then apply again. A senior SWA Capt told me they often hire folks on their 2nd or 3rd interview (it took his brother-in-law until his 4th interview to get hired)...having a Type and coming back again and again shows you have the no-kiddin, burning desire to be part of the team.
Good luck...apologies on the dissertation, but I hope it helps with your decision process.
