[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]FAA Cites ‘Abuse’ and ‘Waste’ at N.Y. Tracon
An FAA investigation of the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (Tracon) determined that it is “more than adequately staffed for safe operations and that local union-controlled scheduling practices are inefficient and wasteful, creating overtime costs that are more than double any other air ATC facility in the country.” The need for overtime was compounded, the report said, “by absences due to widespread abuse of sick leave and workers compensation claims that allowed 21 controllers to earn more than $200,000 last year; this year, that number is projected to increase to 51.” According to the report, many controllers logged overtime during weeks in which they also called in sick. Eight days after the FAA last year placed “strict controls” on overtime usage, the report said, the agency began receiving anonymous hotline reports of operational errors. The most serious operational errors were attributable to “performance problems by individual controllers, not staffing levels.” The report also uncovered no evidence of controller fatigue in connection with operational errors; instead, the investigation concluded that controllers at the facility worked an average of 3 hours 39 minutes a day, the lowest of any major Tracon. In response to the team’s findings and recommendations, the FAA said it will take the following actions: restore management responsibility for scheduling of the facility by canceling former agreements that “gave the union de facto control”; curb the alleged abuses of sick leave, schedule manipulation and workers compensation; and turn over all evidence of inappropriate behavior to the DOT Inspector General.

If you are over 31...you're too late!! I took the test, got 100%, and they said you'll be too old next year!! Wait...isn't that age discrimination?

3 hours and 39 minutes averaged across a year, or each day at work?

For some reason, it's not discrimination when the government does it.

Since you asked so nicely, I'll be right over! Just e-mail me your name and employee number so I can add it to my online profile. Thanks buddy! Beer's on me! Wait a minute.....you're the seriously rich dude with all the most excellent stuff...you're buying!

This 3 hours and 39 minutes thing is just like when the media says pilots only work 70 hours a month.

IHAVE,

How about eating a little humble pie? We are fortunate at FedEx, but we are not invincible. Plus, humility will serve us well during contract negotiations.

Second, BS on thousands of FedEx pilots making 200K. Fact, unless you are a 12 yr Capt on the Airbus or MD-11, you cannot make 200k unless you fly on your days off. So,unless you are flying on your days off or are a 12 yr widebody Capt, congrats on the 200k. But I guarantee you 2,000 FedEx pilots do not make 200K.

Here is the math...

12yr widebody Capt - $200.68

8 4-week bid months - Avg pay 75 hrs.
4 5 week bid months - Avg pay 94 hrs (Both conservative)

Total hrs for year - 976

Pay.. 976*200.68 = $195,863

All International add another $6,500 for override and Per diem throw in another
$50 dollars a day international equals about another $6,000 to $7,000.

Total about $209,000.

I personally would like to make over $200,000 as a Captain without having to fly extra, maybe that should be our goal.

Mr.Zog is right, humble pie is my favorite but I don't think IHave is too far off base. The purpletail goup is very fortunate and are in a wonderful position to have a bright and prosperous future. But I have a feeling that UA,AA and DAL were all thinking the same thing just 5 years ago...FedEx is NOT immune to fault.

I count my blessings everyday that FedEx called me first and offered me a job but it could have just as easily been any other major. I even had an interview scheduled with Delta a couple of months later but that was cancelled by some unexpected events. Timing IS everything but you also have to put yourself in the right position.

Peak is not too far away and I have a feeling the natives are going to start getting restless if the contract talks don't start progressing more over the next couple of months.

Stay united, stay strong, support the MEC and ONE MORE DAY OF RETRO PAY! We have to set the new bar for the rest of the industry... we HAVE to!

Very, very true. It's only a matter of time before Air China or "Third-World Express Shipping" is flying boxes between A and B in this country (probably before November '08).

If you guys haven't figured the Pension guy out yet, open your eyes. He's not even a FedEx employee. Take a look at his past posts and you'll find that he just wants to post flame bait to gets guys going off on FedEx. Just his online name says it all for me. Best thing to do is ignore his dribble!

You guys seem to know more about this than I do. It just seems like controllers have alot of responsibility. The ones I have dealt with have done a pretty good job. On the other hand I have never visited an ARTCC so I may not know what I am talking about.
