Cost of airlining is not an issue.

Its duty time spent attached to an airplane that matters. The time spent airlining is non productive... and costly.

Do the owners have to subsidize the increase in fuel price even when they don't fly, or is it figured into the monthly/hourly cost? It would seem that at some point, fuel price would discourage use and ownership.

Fuel prices hurt you and me. It does not hurt the rich. These people dont care about fuel costs, and they also dont like the thought of going thru the security line at EWR or JFK.

You can't use "normal" people's logic. "A List" celebrities and CEOs do not and will not fly on commercial transportation. Especially now that all these enlightened airlines (sarcasm)have removed all but 2 rows of First Class seats.

Your average FBO ramp will have half a dozen Globals and GVs at $40+ mil each. How many SWA tickets do you think they could have gotten with $40mil? The more FC seats the airlines take out, the more planes we add.

This should illustrate how things are -

I picked up the daughter of an owner on the east coast and flew her to So Cal. Two days later, we just happened to be the aircraft that she used to return home. In casual conversation, I asked what she had gone to CA for and she replied "shopping."

Roughly 10 hours of occupied time in a Citation X on the round trip just to go shopping. I don't think they're worried about the price of gas.

A friend reports he picked up a 70+ yr old widow and her cat at BFI. They flew the Ultra to the mountains near Aspen nd circled without landing to return to BFI.

You see... her cat had never seen the Colorado mountains before.

Of course these rich women like pilots....they like pilots to be on time. They like pilots to load their bags. They like pilots to provide a safe flight. You see they like pilots, they just dont want to date pilots or pay pilots.

Let's put this in terms you and I can understand.

Lets say a friend calls and invites you to a liquid lunch downtown. You accept but wisely decide not to drive. You decision is do you take the bus or call a cab?

The bus cost $1, but you'll have to walk to end end of the street where the bus stop is, you don't know what the schedule is so you may be waiting awhile, you'll have to share the bus with a bunch of folk you don't know, the bus will take longer to get you there due to multiple stops and of course you'll have to walk to the resturant once the bus drops you off. What a hassle but it only costs a $1.

Alternatively you could skip all the hassle and call a cab. The cab costs $20.

I'd call the cab even though its 20 times more expensive than the bus. Why? Because the saving is not worth the hassle of the bus and the $20 is not a lot compared to my income.

Now say the cost of fuel goes up and the cab ride is now $25. Would it affect my decision? Likely not.

Oz, you are so right. Perfect analogy! It's hard for us to imagine the bucks these owners are willing to spend but to them it is a drop in the bucket.
