Can anyone guess the busiest Class D airport in the US (as far as aircraft movements)? It is ranked 25th in the world as far as number of movements.

I'd have to guess KTEB....I swear I must have spent 2 hours sitting in line to get out of their in a Bonanza one hot, humid July afternoon. Although KAPA is pretty busy too.........

And Minitour your money is as good as in the bank for DFW. If one of those old warhorses at AirMan (BTW is Brenda still there??)will make it to DFW, head over there about 4 am and they'll **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** near give you the run of the place :) It seems like after 2 am most of the airline flying is pretty much done for the night so it's just you and the freight dogs..............

One of the major flight schools, UND, Riddle, or Purdue??

According to stats published in ATW magazine, it is SFB (Sanford) just north of Orlando. I don't have the numbers in front of me but the last two years they have been ranked around number 25 in regards to aircraft movements. It is interesting to read through the list and see the usual airports, ORD, ATL, DFW, etc. then there's SFB in the mix.

SFB is home to Comair/Delta Connection academy so that's a huge piece. Then they also have commercial (mostly foreign airlines) plus the usual GA stuff. So on a typical day you'll see a 767, C172, DC9, and a seminole all waiting in line together.

SFB will be "upgrading" to Class C in the near future.

Sanford is ranked #21 in 2004 ..

check out the link i posted.

edit: odd... airnav says sanford only has 374/day - that can't be right :/

hell man...now that I don't have to, I won't take one of those planes out of the local practice area...had to abort two takeoffs on touch and gos about two weeks ago b/c the engine quit...radios are out on half of the fleet...

Besides, I don't really function except for maybe 11am - 5pm...so I'd have to hit it in the middle of the day. There's a FBO down the ramp that has some pretty pimped out 172s from what I hear...

I'm still willing to bet the landing fee I could get in there though...any good golf courses in the DFW area?

Jeez mini, ever thought about renting from a different company?

LOL

Some of these are amazing.

Of course the problem was an easy fix. It was my fault. I had the mixture at full rich and you don't want that when its 20 degrees (F) out...you lean for taxi and takeoff...my bad

After the second time I said that was enough...I think tower was glad I made that call...

If anyone was in the Citation behind us the first time, I'm sorry!
Would have called it a day there and then, but the instructor decided to try one more time.

....and according to AirNav, they have only 374 operations/day. The airport I flew out of as a CFI is listed on AirNav as having 519 operations/day, yet isn't on the "big list".

I point this out only as a way to prove that perhaps AirNav isn't exactly correct...

Does "pimped out" mean that the doors match the fuselage?? I'm not too sure there is such a thing as a pimped out 172. I do remember flying with Jerry the owner (back when he was the temporary CP) and upon landing the whole top of the panel fell off. Good times out there in OUN, a couple of guys in my group never left. Those college girls still makes me miss the place :)

The duchess is the biggest POS we've got....last I heard there were 9 inop stickers and the instructor can stick his hand through the top of the door when its shut.

I think Jerry's got a 421 now...it just sits there on the ramp and from time to time it'll be gone...

Good stuff out here...if they ever get you in the plane...

So much for a 12 week course  hell...so much for a 4-5 month course

*edit*
Pimped out to me is an autopilot and IFR approved GPS...not that I like GPS approaches, but for enroute usage...yum!

uhm..... mini.

The hoter the air gets, the more you lean it out - not so when it gets cold.

As it gets colder & air density increases, you enrich the mixture.

I usually always lean my mixture before take off since it will always give better takeoff performance. During the colder days (read, low density altitude), i don't lean out much, but during the hot summer days when density altitude reaches 5000 ft here in tulsa, it often appeared that my mixture control was half way out for best performance.

I know...I tried telling the mechanic (and instructor) that, but no...it was my fault...I was being facetious :D

I have landed at DFW in a 172 when I was a student pilot with my CFI. (long story)

oh paaahleeezedo tell....did they give you a progressive to the base of the tower only to find 2 faa guys at the bottom?? please do tell im intrested as to knowing why you would go there when theres tons of others all around that would be glad to take ya..ADS, DAL maybe??

Why would there be two FAA guys waiting for someone that landed at DFW?

Why is it a big deal if someone goes in there? It's an airport, and a public use one. I don't see the problem.

Last time I was at a Class B, I was there...just to go. Went at night and it was a bit slower than DFW, I'm sure, but the guys in approach and Tower were cool. They had me on about a 50 mile final (exaggeration) out over lake Erie, but other than that it was no big deal. Ground gave me a progressive taxi in and out, and tower "opened up" a "closed" runway for me so I didn't have to wait for the airbus' wake. (no good reason it was closed, it just was...so I got 24R with a turn to the north when everyone else was on 24L)

Even before that, I was there in the beginning of a little "push" in the afternoon. Only time it seemed that someone was annoyed was the lady on Gnd when I mis-read a taxi instruction. When she called back, I got it right and it seemed as though all was forgiven. Ahhh the student pilot days.

Just don't plan on flying a mile final at 55kts and I don't think there's any problem.

Class B doesn't mean "Be sure you don't be comin in here now"...just Busy...I don't understand.

Are we on for the "deal"?

It was all pretty routine, we had to drop something off, and pick someone up. The only thing different was all the people making smart a$$ comments on the radio.

I went to DAL at around 4PM and left at around 5PM. Other than the 2 southwest 737's on a parrallel & infront of me no major events :/

I did go in IFR though - i'm guessing that helped :)

Although not as busy as TEB, VNY, or DVT - a lot goes on here, and definately not for the weekender dr. bonanza crowd.

I have flown into LAX, LAS, ORD, JFK, LGA, EWR, MCO, ATL, MEM, BNA, MDW, DFW, CLT, PHL, RDU, BWI, IAD and BOS all in small single engine pistons. One of my IFR students wanted to get some good actual experience during training so I picked a really crappy low IFR day with some heavy rain and off we went from FRG to JFK, LGA, EWR, PHL, BWI, IAD and PHF all in one evening. Sometimes right in the middle of the busy times- no problems; as long as you know your radios and have half decent IFR skills. Flew into DFW around 10 times last summer in and out in the Citation with no problems at all... and no, didnt ever have any smart a$s remarks either. Just normal normal.
