Gizbug,

I also learned to fly in SE Michigan(ARB). Making a living there, as an instructor is very difficult from Nov-Apr. One year my CFII logged 1 flight hour in the month of January. Snow, low ceilings, and icing always seemed to keep me on the ground. If you are really serious, I suggest you move to Florida or Texas to build your time. I instructed in the Ft. Worth area for 2 years and moved on. Getting by on what they pay CFI's is hard enough, even when you can fly everyday.

Also, if you plan to move, see if the other CFIs share a house or something of that nature. They did where I moved to, and you can actually afford to live when rent is all split up like that. Some of these jobs say $20 an hour, but when it's only for when the hobbs is moving you're screwed.

And for the guys renting planes once a week, save up and get a quick CFI-I. It's fast and really helps getting a leg up on a job. Hell, just read those ads above, most prefer CFI-I.

Keep at it and good luck all :D
