For those with low hours like me, how are you currently building hours? I have searched for CFI jobs in SE Michigan, and the last 2 months, come up empty. So I am a lost soul, needing hours, wanting to fly. I may end up trying the Air Ambulance service, see if I can get hours that way. If worst comes to worse, I may have to resort to moving out of state to find something to build hours.

Just want to hear what others in my shoes are doing right now.

CFI jobs in Florida are scarce as well. I rent a plane with a buddy at least once a month just to maintain proficiency...i really should be flying once a week but that's too expensive. Every now and then, I get some freelance stuff. I have a non-aviation job to pay bills and stuff. Right now, I'm looking into joining Civil Air Patrol...it sounds like fun.
If you're limiting your job search to aviation related employment, you're probably going to come up empty-handed most of the time. If you haven't already, get a job that will pay the bills and fly when you're off. It seems that's the only thing to do right now.

I just use the money I get from work and rent a plane every week. Sometimes twice or three times a week. I'll take trips with friends, do the hundred dollar hamburger thing, or just practice. Once I'm out of school and have the time to flight instruct, I'll do that.

I was instructiong but the school had too many cfi's and not enough students and I was just a part timer, needless to say I did not get any students. Being unemployed, I can'ty spend the money to fly periodically, its tough out there.

staying current

Flight sim 2002, baby!!!

I know I can't log it, but I also can't afford to fly right now. This is the next best thing to the flying a real plane.

Instructing is the way to go. Builds great experience, and fast. Lots of higher jobs like CFI's. Considering the scarcity of jobs right now, moving out of state is pretty much the only way. And showing up in person too! I know that, because I was in your shoes 15 months ago. I got lucky last June, and flew 950 hours since then. If you have the time a few bucks, go on a road trip nicely dressed with 20 resumes, go to ALL the arports in major cities. That's what I did and it paid. If you are willing to drive far, I know of a few places in the SF bay area that are or soon will looking for an instructor or 2. There are jobs out there, they are just not advertised. Good luck!

How I built hours

I was never a CFI and didn't get my private until I was 35. So to build hours I bought a $15,000 Cessna 150. I'd stop at the gas station on the way to the airport and fill up my three 5gal gas cans and put autogas in the plane. It cost about $6 per hour fly that plane and man, I flew the crap out of it. Every day after work I flew for at least an hour and then at least five or more on the weekends.

Now I was not made of money then (still poor) so I sacrificed a lot to make those payment on the plane buy heck, it was cheaper than a new car! When I hit a thousand hours I sold it for a grand more than I paid for it so all that flying was nearly free.

You may even get a partner if that will help.

Think about it!

BaronFR8Dog,

that's a great idea in general. but i don't think Southwest would be too impressed with tons of 152 time.

on the other hand, you can get an old Aztec for 50 or 60 k, doable with a partner, and fly the wings off that sucker. of course, it won't take mogas, but still cheaper than renting.

Spitfire,

The idea wasn't to build time for southwest. The guy who asked is a 400 hour pilot. My suggestion was a way for him to get his first 1000-1200 to get at least to part 135 mins.

It worked for me and now I'm pushin 3800 total and 1200 multi. Onward & upward!

I feel that I was lucky to land the CFI gig I have now. I've built 1000hours(300 multi)in a year and getting ready for 135. Now, if I could just get a lead somewhere.......

Hey BaronFR8dog,

Think you could help another in pewter and red? Born at St. Joseph's, house in Brandon and season tickets for 11 years.........

just added up june....almost 100 hours in the 1900 for colgan air. My best month yet here. A year ago i was flight instructing to build time.

Baron,

you're right, and i wasn't meaning to be sarcastic. I think more people should look into doing that to get themselves out of the three-digit flight times.

any chance you fly for airnet?

Mozer,

1900 must be some quality multi-time, but i doubt I could make ends meet with Colgan's pay and work rules ... i'm going to have to stick with part-time navajos for now.

Spitfiire. I work for Flight Expess & darn proud to fly the ugliest planes in the world!

Mozzer, sure, drop me a PM. Man, I miss home.

GOOOOOOOO BUCS!!! REPEAT!!
