I'm trying to put together a game-plan for UPT and was wondering what the housing situation is for married types. Is there a long wait for base housing? For those who get apartments off base, are they reasonable? Any other info you can give me on this topic is appreciated, as I have no idea what to expect...

Thanx.

Don't have a date yet. Just got out of AMS and am playing the waiting game. I was just looking for details in general....
thanks

There is quite a bit of good info in the message board at baseops.net. Click this link and it will take you there. Go to the military spouses forum (I'm serious) and display the topics from the last 30 days. There is lots of information about Laughlin and Vance, and a little about Moody and Columbus. I hope you get some good information.

Since UPT bases have transient groups by the nature of the program, there are usually base houses available. Class graduates every couple of weeks. If you know / when you know which base you are going to, give the housing office there a call...they will info concerning on-base and off-base housing.

The goal at Laughlin AFB is that no student will reside off base. In the last two years I have not heard of a student off base. If you are married you WILL have a house on base...period. If there are other open houses available, they will put two or three single students in houses. Finally, the remainder of the single students will get BOQ rooms.

What are the houses like? I'm sure they vary from base to base, but are we talking decent size? 2, 3, 4 bedroom, garage, basement, etc....?

The size house you get depends on how many dependents you have, but in most cases it will be a small three bedroom house with a carport. The only houses with garages are the wing commander and vice wing commander. There are a few two bedroom houses, but in general those are given to two single students. You can expect a three bedroom house if you are married.

What are the BOQ rooms like? Do they have washers/dryers, internet, etc? I've heard as a 2LT at Laughlin you'll either get BOQ or you can get a house on base with another student. If given a choice, which is the better deal? I've heard that you can't get a house unless you're a higher ranking guy or you know someone who is and they request you.

I think Laughlin has W&D hookups. Here are a few links that should be helpful...

Laughlin: http://www.militaryexits.com/military_bases/laughlin_tx_afb.shtml

Vance: http://www.militaryexits.com/military_bases/vance_ok_afb.shtml

Moody: http://www.militaryexits.com/military_bases/moody_ga_afb.shtml

Columbus: http://www.militaryexits.com/military_bases/columbus_ms_afb.shtml

Sheppard: http://www.militaryexits.com/military_bases/sheppard_tx_afb.shtml

Scroll about 2/3 of the way down and you will find housing info. Some bases have more info than others. And yes, if there are enough houses, you might be able to split one with another student. I DEFINATELY think this would be the way to go, but then again, I haven't been there - done that yet........

Info for Laughlin:

Single folks...

UOQ (Unaccompanied Officer's Quarters, aka: dorms)

What is it? Think studio apartment. Bed, desk, dresser, TV cabinet, small kitchen with stove, microwave, mini breakfast bar, and fridge. W&D located downstairs in breezeways.

Things that cost extra: TV, Internet (dial-up only in dorms... high speed in library), phone.

Wait time: Usually, not more than 3 weeks after showing up. I only waited a week which seems to be the running average.

Duplex Housing (for 2 single officers)

What is it? 2BR house. No furniture. No carpet (all linoleum). Kitchen comes with major appliances. W&D hook-ups.

Things that cost extra: Same as above.

Wait time: Some folks have been told they will have duplexes some time in June. Wait times CAN be very long which is a huge disadvantage.

Married folks:
Some people have been told they have to live off-base, but this is rare and can be worked around.

Don't know much about the married housing. I haven't heard anything negative. I think it's about the same as duplex housing except bigger.

Don't expect much. All the housing down here is old, but it's comfortable and you'll only be here a year (unless you FAIP... in that case, may God have mercy on your soul).

Lata!

So WTF does someone do with their family during the wait to get on-base housing???

I went to columbus, they had bigger rooms on base. I dont remember what they were called, but they were decent, bigger kitchen than the UOQ. Living room area and one bedroom. It was just my wife and I there but others with kids lived in them too.

It usually doesnt take long for a house to pop up, and theyre pretty nice.

Laughlin has a brand new billeting facility for short term stays (single person waiting for a room or house), as well as a temporary living facility for families that includes a kitchen, small living room, bedroom, and bath. Don't worry, the AF takes care of you and your family.

Yes, the AF definitely takes care of its people. Just be flexible and realize that often times you will find things out at the last minute. That sucks, but that's the AF.
