I have an interview with Horizon next week at UND (not intended for flamebait).
Just wondering if anyone on here has interviewed with them in the past in Grand Forks, and if so how similar is the process compared to the gouges for interviews held in Portland?
Any info will be greatly appreciated!

1)The SIM

They will have you do a sim ride in a frasca 242 I believe. The sims performance will be @ around 180%- 200% normal(a real rocket in the climb) The sim will be a departure from (When I did it, it was) JMS north dakota. You will intercept a 5-7 dme arc and arc for a while then they will have you track oubound on a radial from the arc. They will pause the sim for a few moments while you setup radios for the NDB phase. They will then give you direct to a local NDB and then give you random holding instructions. I think they may give you the holding instructions while your frozen in space. You can also figure it out then as well. After the hold you are cleared for the ndb approach. You fly that procedure, then go published missed. After that you are given vectors to an ils approach which you will land from. During the sim they give you light turbulence on the sim. They will tell you how they want you to fly the sim and speeds they want. During the entire sim, they give you a 20 knot wind but they don't tell you what direction its coming from.

2)Personal interview with HR...and Panel interview with CPs from SEA and PDX
I lumped these together because they seemed like they asked similar questions....such as "Tell me about a time when you learned somin about aviation you did not expect to learn" "Why Horizon?" "Would you prefer the jet or the dash?" Really relaxed and easy atmosphere. No techy questions here.

3)Sample ATP Test.
They give you a 50 question test with questions right out of the atp written...its been too long(5 yrs) for me to remember what they were sorry.

The interview process will take about a half of a day. Most spent waiting for your turn. The different portions of the interview will take place at different times for everyone. They will give your their answer at the end of the day when they call you in one at a time to tell in front of all the interviewers. I did not get it. I fudged the sim ride up.
Hope that helps. good luck.

If you do get it, there are lots of great bars in GFK that have cheap beer to celebrate with.

If you don't get it there are lots of great bars in GFK that have cheap beer to mourn with.

A list of my favorite bars::D
Down under ---1.50 pitchers on friday----
Blue Moose---better beer selection---
The edge (if you like a more dance music thing) ---nickel taps on thursdays---
That bar underneath the edge
Whitey's
Muddy Waters ---cheap hotel bar but cool drink specials---

Good luck

Ahh....buck fiftys at the down under....the good old days of college...now its $6.00 beers in NYC, man it sucks growing up.

Horizon interviewed around 20 last November at UND and took about half. They hired for the Dash-8: 200 & 400 and the CRJ-700. There was a rumor of the number they were going to take and they took exactly what the rumor said.

They started with a nice informational session where they played a entertaining video and spoke about the company. They then briefed the simulator profile and speeds. They will probably have a one-on-one HR interview and a two-on-one technical interview with another person just taking notes. Same interview style as other gouges.

The simulator will be in one of the new Seminole FTD’s with the higher performance selected. Last year, the airport was Rochester, MN but it could be anywhere with the new sims. The profile is exactly as all of the other interviews they do. Take your time setting things up and relax. Be able to fly to ATP standards and be comfortable with a fixed card NDB hold and approach.

It was a fun, comfortable interview. Good company however, moving to the left seat may take quite awhile. Have fun, relax, share some stories and have a few follow-up questions for them. They are just getting to know you.

Good Luck!

The Parrot's Cay has the best wings in town. Actually, the best I've ever had. Don't be a pu$$y, go for the 15's! (and make sure you have plenty of beer available to put out the fire!) My picture can be seen on the "Wall of Flame" under "The Joefish."

I'm going to homecoming this year........

Is it getting cold up there yet?
From my 4 years there, I only remember two temps: Hot as hell, and cold as hell.

Nickels on Wednesdays or Thursdays?

Thank you all for the input, it sounds like Horizons interview process is going to be very similar to what they have in Portland.

I thought it was Wednesdays? It has been too long, or all the beer had destroyed to many brain cells to remember.
My cupboard is filled with a large variety of glass pints with some good beer logos. Wife almost got rid of them, knuckles still hurt...

Have fun as a career F.O. Green Hornets. Gonna be a LONG LONG time before you upgrade at Horizion. Enjoy your 8+ years in the right seat. Hope that 100K that UND raped you for was worth it! LOL

Some people just love to be a$$holes. I bet you're a lot of fun on a trip.

There is a reason not many people leave Horizon, and it has little to do with stagnant major/LCC options. If you had to be a long-term FO, Horizon is probably the best regional out there for it. What is your alternative - a potentially faster upgrade at a contract carrier tied to Delta, Airways or United???

Oh I forgot, people are supposed to kill themselves flight instructing two-three years, then fly night freight for two-three years, then slave away for a "commuter" for a couple years then upgrade and get their 1000 PIC, then its off to United or American! But it'll be 8-12 years to upgrade there, so you might take your chances with this upstart airline called JetBlue paying crummy wages on an Airbus. You might upgrade in 1-2 years, or less!!!

oh, wait...

I thought all UND alum’s mommy's and daddy’s massaged our tongues with a silver spoon and picked up our tabs, so that 8+ year FO stretch will be a cake walk. You know your right, flying for a company that doesn't upgrade you in a year or even two must be a real sh!thole. Thank you, I am enlightened, I think I will work for a great company like Mesa that has real fast upgrades since that is what is all about.

Sarcasm aside, I am taking a gamble at a lengthy FO position, but for me the pros out weigh the cons. How I look at it is Horizon has a relatively small pilot group (700 or so, somebody please correct me if I am wrong) so an attrition of captains or increase in fleet size will make a much larger impact compared to a large pilot base like American Eagle. Maybe I am naive, ignorance is bliss, I think that the upgrade times will start to decrease. The upgrades will eventually go back to lengthy periods, and if I miss it this time around, I will be happy to accept my fate as a professional Flap Operator for a great company.

It's unfortunate that you have ill will towards UND for whatever reason. Just like any airline, each pilot training choice has their own pros and cons for individuals, which is better for a person is up to them. I feel very grateful that I was able to put my own way trough a 4 year aviation program, by the way the cost was no where near 100k. Pay the interest from the start, and only take the amount needed each semester not the full amount available, it makes a huge difference.
Is my degree useful outside aviation, you're **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** right it's not, but I didn't go to an aviation college to learn to sharpen a pencil with my a$$hole while sitting behind a desk. Is my degree useful in aviation, I will let you know when I am "living the dream" throwing the flaps down.
