Maybe I`m missing something, but I worked for a major for `bout 30 years and paid my dues to ALPA for all those years but WTF are you talking about?

I can't think of any airline that currently has an official "hiring ban" from ALPA or IFALPA. IFALPA had a hiring ban on Cathay Pacific a couple of years ago, but that's long since been removed. What airline are you thinking of?

There are a few airlines that currently have hiring bans in place. For example, Dragon Air B747-400 Cargo FOs. A hiring ban is basically a warning put out by the union that says, "do not accept the job. We are negotiating for a better contract. If you take the job under the current poor conditions of service we will view you as a scab and you will never have union protection or be able to join the union."

Hope that helps.

Bad day? ;)

Don't forget the $cab outfit Boston&Maine (alter ego for Pan Am). Seems they have no shortage of applicants. For those thinking of sending a resume, read the DOT Docket #7668 and see their true colors.

Is joining an airline with a hiring ban the same thing as crossing the picket line?

Yes. But not to worry. Neither will affect your chances in the future. Take the first position that comes your way.

Most of those guys are "self banning". Once you slip into the grips of one of those carriers at the above airports, you are not likely to easily escape. Notice all the guys that never leave those airports, they just change companies!
