Old Gouge

O.K., I hope this helps. Before I begin, this gouge is almost 4 years old. I have no idea what it is like now, so don't quote me on this.

What to know:
You must know about the company. Go to UPS.com and read the part that explains the history of the company to present day. Who founded it, when, with what, where, company reinventing itself (hint: dept stores to homes) advent of the trucks, shipping by air, how many trucks, how many airplanes, how many employees, where do we go, airframe types, regional air sorts, etc. Don't kill yourself memorizing, just know the basics. UPS is a giant transportation conglomerate, and the airline is just a small piece of the whole pie. You are being interviewed as a possible UPS EMPLOYEE, not just a pilot. That is the attitude you must bring with you. Knowledge about the company is a must. Also, know what other types of business UPS has it's hands into. i.e., banks, logistics.

Regarding technical knowledge:
First of all, tell Kit Darby to take his interview gouge and blow it out his a$$. UPS doesen't care if you can build an ILS system from scratch. They do care that you can fly one safely. If you're current on a turbine aircraft and have been flying around regularly in the IFR system, than you should be set. No trick questions. I was given an approach plate and asked to brief it. What are the minimums, the MSA, minimums with the GS inop, T/O and destination alternate requirements under 121, holding speeds, how would I enter the hold, and a few questions about weather and weather radar. That's it. No trick questions.

Miscellaneous: a few typical HR questions such as strengths and weaknesses that you would expect anywhere.

SIM: Non-threat. Mine was in the 727, and I never flew a 727 before. Take-off, level off, maintain 250 knots, where am I (north of the field per the RDMI), climbs and descents, and an ILS. They are not looking for SkyKing, just to see if you are trainable.

I heard the A300 sim rumor for interviews and I asked an A300 captain about it. He doubts it's true. He said that sim is busy 24/7 with training. I would expect the 727 or DC-8. It wouldn't hurt to get a couple of hours in either one (or another transport sim if not available) and practice ILS approaches, level offs, turns, and holds.

Overall, my interview was one of the most relaxed and enjoyable experiences I ever had. The people that will interview you are really great and you will like them. Just be yourself and you should be fine.

Again, I emphasize that this is OLD GOUGE, and the whole process may be different now. That's my disclaimer. So in case this is totally non-current, please don't crap in my flightbag. : ) Seriously though, I hope this helps. Good luck to all who are interviewing , and hope to see you on the line soon.

I'm Clyde, and I approved this message.

Hey, H25BCTN -

I am actually a new interviewer. Go figure. I wasn't even expecting a call that quick. I did the online application about a week or two ago and BAM! got a call. I'm very excited. But also very nervous since the gouge is so old and I haven't flown a 727 before.

Clyde,

Thank you so very much for your help. It is what everyone has been saying to do so I'm doing it. I have another question.....where can I get some 727 time (in the sim, of course)?

Good job. Go in confident and you will do great.

Great news for you and others.

(getting and paying for a little time in the sim may help but not sure what sim yet--)

keep us posted.

Congrats!! Just out of curiosity, what are your flight times, quals?

Thanks!

beechball:

I just purchased some 727 sim time at Alteon/DFW. The sim costs $350.00 per hour. The sim instructor (Mr. Gravy?) was awesome, he actually let me go for about 1.6 till I had had enough.

Google Alteon, call any office, and ask for the number to the DFW operation.

Also, what what your quals/times you listed on your CV/resume?

beechball:

i tried to send you a pm--if you didnt get it let me know--

still trying to figure out computers--i doubt they ever catch on.

Simulator Rental:

I did a google search and found Pan Am flight academy. I'm not sure if they rent out sims or not for interview prep, but here is what they had:

B-727-200 in MSP, MIA, and MEM.

Again, not sure if these are for rent or not, but it wouldn't hurt to give them a call. I bought sim time at a place in MIA, I think it was called Aero-tech. Purchased a few hours in a DC-8. Instructor was great and really helped out a lot.

Thanks for the "well wishes!!" I am so excited!! I believe it is going to be an A-300 sim. Wow!! Hope I can just keep that thing in the air.

I really hope to be wearing brown in the near future!!!
