The first two paragraphs are quotes from Hamas leadership regarding this act....I know its like putting the cart before the horse, but I wanted to make sure that these quotes didn't get lost at the end of the story......they are far to important to be missed........

"Sharon has opened the gates of hell and nothing will stop us from cutting off his head," leaders of the radical Islamic group vowed.

"The Zionists didn't carry out their operation without getting the consent of the terrorist American Administration, and it must take responsibility for this crime," Hamas said in a statement faxed to The Associated Press. "All the Muslims of the world will be honored to join in on the retaliation for this crime," the statement said.

.......sound like reasonable folks, huh? Kerry supporters no doubt.

Israeli Airstrike Kills Hamas Founder

Mar 21, 11:47 PM (ET)

By IBRAHIM BARZAK

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Sheik Ahmed Yassin, the founder and leader of the Hamas militant group that targeted Israelis in suicide bombings, was killed by missiles fired from Israeli helicopters as he left a mosque at daybreak Monday, witnesses said.

Hamas confirmed the death in an announcement broadcast over mosque loudspeakers and vowed revenge against Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Witnesses said Israeli helicopters fired three missiles at the wheelchair-bound Yassin and two bodyguards as they left the mosque, killing them instantly.

A total of four people were killed and 12 were wounded in the attack, witnesses said.

Yussef Haddad, 35, a taxi driver, said he saw the missiles hit Yassin and the bodyguards.

"Their bodies were shattered," he said.

Yassin was by far the most senior Palestinian militant killed in more than three years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. Since September 2000, 474 people - the majority of them Israelis - have been killed in 112 Palestinian suicide bombings.

Sharon's government has gone after militant leaders using Israeli helicopter gunships in a controversial policy that has resulted in a number of civilian casualties in addition to the deaths of senior figures in Hamas and other groups.

Yassin was viewed as an inspirational figure by his followers in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. His death could spur violent protests not only in the Palestinian areas but in the wider Arab and Islamic world, where he was well-regarded as a symbol of the Palestinian battle for independence.

Thousands of angry Palestinians gathered minutes after the attack, calling for revenge against Israel.

In announcing Yassin's death, Hamas said, "(Israeli Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon has opened the gates of hell and nothing will stop us from cutting off his head."

Ambulances and fire trucks raced to the scene with sirens wailing, and rescue workers gathered up the shattered bodies.

Outside the morgue at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh, a close associate of Yassin, had tears in his eyes as he confirmed Yassin's death and pledged revenge.

"This is the moment Sheik Yassin dreamed about," Haniyeh said. "Sheik Yassin lived and died and offered his life to Palestine. Sheik Yassin was a hero and a fighter and the leader of a nation, and (he) is in heaven now."

Yassin founded Hamas at the start of the first Palestinian intefadeh, or uprising, in 1987. It is an offshoot of the Islamic fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, which is based in Egypt.

The Bush administration, as well as Israel, lists Hamas as a terrorist group.

Yassin was held in Israeli prisons for several years before being released in 1994.

Yassin lived in a modest house in the rundown Sabra neighborhood in Gaza City. Israel, which blamed him for inspiring Hamas bombers and attackers who killed hundreds of Israelis, tried unsuccessfully to kill him in a September missile strike that injured 16 people.

Past Israeli governments were reluctant to target Yassin, fearing a firestorm of revenge attacks.

BBC's take on the subject

The following are some clippings from a BBC story on this event. Anyone who doubts the media's obvious liberal bias needs to check this out:

Yet (Yassin) wielded growing power among Palestinians, long frustrated with a peace process that has failed to improve their lives.
-uh, and Hamas' constant homocide bombings had nothing to do with the "failing to improve their lives?"

Believing that a divided leadership would undermine Palestinian interests, Sheikh Yassin sought to maintain good relations with the Palestinian Authority and with other regimes in the Arab world.
-never mind that terrorism was his bargaining tool when dealing with everyone else.

Militant groups like Hamas did initially declare a temporary truce, but that unravelled in July 2003 after Israeli forces killed two Hamas members in retaliation for the suicide bombing of a Jerusalem bus that left 21 people dead.
-so we're gonna lay the blame on the Isrealis because the terrorists went back on their word? Come on, BBC!!

Hamas has been able to build support by offering material help to Palestinians suffering economic hardship during the latest intifada.

It has established charitable funds to establish schools, clinics and hospitals that provide free services to families in distress and has been able to attract millions of dollars from the Gulf and elsewhere.

Sheikh Yassin himself proved a powerful inspiration for young Palestinians disillusioned with the collapse of peace hopes.

He inspired them to offer up their lives, promising that suicide bombers who were willing to die for the sake of the dignity of Palestinians and in the service of a longer-term victory would achieve martyrdom.
-Wow! what a bunch of humanitarians these guys are!! Where do I sign up?!

It's no wonder to me why so many people abroad dislike "W." If I was subjected to this sort of garbage reporting every day without an alternative viewpoint, I'd hate President Bush, too.

(The US media is only a shade or two better....just for giggles, see if you can pick up on the "slants" in the AP story in my first post....I've found two so far)

One thing to consider is that Hamas has a charitable arm that's very popular in the Gaza Strip. They fund schools, clinics, and social programs and have given the appearence of being a good alternative to the corrupt (and secular) Palestinian Authority. What I'm getting at is that even "moderate" Arabs in Palestine are gonna be angry about Yassin (even though he should've been finished long ago).

As far as the BBC, it's not that they're just liberal (only state-controlled media tend to be conservative), but they've always been anti-Israel.

What better example to show them than: "Even if you form a great charity and do wonderful works, we will not overlook the fact you are a murderer...".

Sounds to me like the abusive divorcee that tries to leverage influence by winning the kids over with gifts. It's sad that the moderate Palestinians can't see this for what it is.

you know through all this media babble the fact remains that the man was human scum and got what he deserved. and yes it will probably only serve to increase the spiral of violence but if we got a shot at bin laden the same as the israelis just got a shot at yassin you know we would take it

Hamas was founded by this guy to eliminate Israel, because he believed they had no right to exist.

So, the aim of Hamas was pretty much the same as Hitler. Both thought that the Jews should be eliminated.

The schools they built indoctrinated homicide bombers. The hospital clinics give care to arabs who were injured in the homicide bombings. Some charity.

swiss....i heard the same thing. i just hope that the Palestinians do something stupid so the Israels can jump on them with both feet.

Pablo Escobar employed the same strategy in Colombia. He was very popular with the locals that he wasn't busy killing.

Now if someone could just get rid of that idiot Sharon.

Amen brother... Amazing how some can only see half the picture that they paint in their distorted mind. Sharon is nothing more than a killer himself which his record shows.

3 5 0

350 only chooses to see his side, which is always right, no matter what logic is employed to refute it.

Blows my mind:rolleyes:

ummm...I thought both the Israelis and Palestines were trying to kill each other off. They are both terrorist states as far as Im concerned. At least they can agree on one thing...not to eat pork.
