Huck's Cheap too!

Albie,

Don't be dissuaded, Huck is among the cheapest. He figures he's going to gamble anyway, so he goes to the place where "If you gamble, we'll comp you".

By the way Huck, got a spare kitchen table that my wife has yet to sell. Has found it's way into the living room for folding laundry. SONAFAB.....

I think I am on my way to Tunica. Huck, you need to come to the dark side and run your own show.

Man that was funny. I'm looking around a stack of towels as we speak.

We may end up moving up there - Albie find us some property and we'll all go.

You know what Howie P. says about the gulf coast - it ain't the heat, it's the stupidity....

Man that's funny. I too find myself looking around a stack of folded towels when at home. This got me thinking...we must all do laundry in our time off. I'll bet if we did a poll on this subject, we might find out how many pilots fill the "Laundry Man" title when at home. I know it makes points with my wife. Sorry for the thread creep. Cheers...ExAF

Well...I love running hard from Sardis to Memphis exploring the woods, lakes, and fields...and then hitting the casinos over on the River.

That being said--I don't think you are going to find any more Rhodes scholars or full ride scholaship winners hanging out in Horn Lake, Hernado, or Coldwater that you are in Mobile, Bay Minette, or Dauphin Island. You'll just have a shorter commute...

there does seem to be a lot of crash pads on the boards lately - not so with cars. you definitely need to stay away from the bad parts of town (many)

Mud Island is a great area for crash pads

I agree with staying in a hotel for your first week in training. You can use the weekend to find a place to live. The Homestead Suites and Holiday Inn near the airport both have descent FedEx crew rates but you can actually do better bidding on Priceline. I stayed at the Homestead for about a month and booked it, usually five nights at a time, through Priceline. The most I ever had to pay was $32/night and a couple of weeks I got a room for $20/night. Limit your search area so you don't get something 20 miles away...Memphis rush hour traffic is the pits. Congrats to all FNG's and enjoy your time in training.
Hey Baron,

I went to Priceline to book the Homestead and the only choices I had were to name the hotel and pay their price ($54/night) or do a name your price and take my chances as to were I would stay. The only option there was to selected the airport area. Am I missing something?

Cheers

That's the route I took. You also select how many stars (2-star) you are willing to accept. Every time I did it this way, the only one that I got was the Homestead. Maybe things have changed in the last 18 months. I would try it for a 2-night stay initially; that way if you get stuck in a $hit hole you'll only have to risk your life a couple of days. Good luck and welcome aboard.

Before bidding on Priceline, go to http://www.biddingfortravel.com . Go down to the state and city and the first link from the administrator is a list showing which hotels priceline uses and their star rating. Sometimes it's only one or two hotels in an area. Below that is a forum where people post the prices they recently paid for their hotels on priceline. I use it and I'd never had a hotel that wasn't listed. The only problem with priceline is the fees. If you can get a room directly with the hotel within $10 of the price on priceline, I'd book directly because the fees on priceline will equal that anyway. Plus booking direct with the hotel allows you to cancel if you can't make it.

I second looking into Tunica for a decent hotel. You need a reliable car though. Last thing I want to do is breakdown at night driving between Memphis and Tunica!

I'd highly recommend NOT staying anywhere near the airport, it's an urban war zone around there. Get a hotel out on poplar or somewhere else in germantown, the rates are usually a little cheaper than the airport and it's a MUCH nicer area, still only 20 minutes from the airport. The slight inconvenience you'll have with rush hour traffic is more than offset by not having your car broken into on a nightly basis and being able to actually find a restaurant that you can walk into without getting shot.

Thanks Baron, Mr. Happy, FDXer and Gregorio,

Thanks for the advice. I'll take it all in and see what I can come up with. It feels good to have these kinds of problems to worry about for a change.

Cheers!

Off subject, but since this is the poolie gouge thread I'd thought I'd share this one. It may help someone from having a heart-attack down the road.
I got the call for a class....happy times. I was told to head back down to the clinic and gave up another sample of the good stuff. Once FDX received the results, I would get the new hire packet in the mail a few days later.
The turn around time for processing the sample is about 48hrs Im told.
Here's the thing, after 1 1/2 weeks I had heard nothing. (Others in my class had days earlier). I decided to call in and was told that FDX had not received my results. Eventually someone figured out that the clinic did not send my custody form to the Lab. They denied it, but my sample was fermenting somewhere in Colorado and wasnt heading anywhere in a hurry. Fortunately, I had my custody form and faxed it in. 3 days later I got the new hire packet. Moral(s) of the story; dont trust anyone in a white coat who collects pp for a living, and keep your receipts.
I wouldnt advocate calling in for everything, but Im glad I did in this case. I'd still be sitting on my suitcase on the porch thinking wtfo?

Just out of curiosity, what comes in the new hire packet? Any good information to pass on?
