There is no info on the web about Aloha's pilot hiring for good reason. They only interview pilots with internal recs. At this time if you manage to get a rec from a Aloha pilot it had better say something like...
I. This guy is so cool...
a. he can marry my daughter
b. he is my hero and idol
c. he is god in the flesh
The letter should also include reference to the aircraft you have flown, preferably something like the space shuttle.

All kidding aside, unless you totally know somebody here as well as having all the qualifications, at this time you wont even be considered.

In other words if we meet in the jumpseat, terminal, bar, beach, parking lot, baby luau, polka dance, etc thats not going to be enough. You have got to have flown with one of us and be a good friend we trust, and convince us you will never leave Aloha for another airline. For an Aloha Pilot we are being asked by mgmt. to totally vouch for somebody before recommending them.

When things pick up industry wide if you still want to fly in Hawaii so badly there should still be openings for a few people without such heavy recs. If you really want it just be patient, it will happen, also consider a year or two at Island Air. If you don't know anybody here now you will after a year at Island Air.

On the other hand if you have already known one of us real good for some time your chances suddenly become excellent. Just like magic.

Last thing, If you dont already love Hawaii you probably wont like it out here as much as you think. You may consider investing your efforts elsewhere. The beaches are crowded, the oceans are overfished, the food is wierd, rentals impossible, real estate outrageous, the locals heavy and the women are all taken. no joke brah.

a little dramatic, but not too far off

yeah, i'd agree with islandhopper. at this stage in the game ya really need a letter of rec from someone in the airline.

i don't agree in that you absolutely have to have flown with whomever you know, but that is a big plus. latest rumors i have heard are something to the effect of needing two letters of rec, but then again, i know of a few guys who went to island air and straight thru to aloha in three or four months knowing no one....

good luck either way though. its a pretty good place to be! the food is weird, the women are all taken, real estate is high, and if ya don't already like it get ready for a major lifestyle change. you're not late, you're on hawaiian time.....

I only had one rec, a gal in my class got in with a rec from somebody she did NOT fly with.

I must have known over a dozen AQ pilots from growing up in Hawaii. I probably asked like 3 or 4 of them for recs. I figured they knew me well enough. Only one felt comfortable with fully vouching for me. That one was all I needed.

I think we covered about everything, only thing I can add is if Hawaiian tanks in the next month or two or they continue to furlough it will go from difficult to impossible to get in at AQ because I am certain AQ's flight ops dept would just hire from their unemployment list until it was exhausted and that could take years. As they say back east "forget about it".
Rumor is the Hawaiian pilot apps are already becoming a short stack.

AQ Pilot or any Island Air pilot or Aloha Pilot with island air experience,

Let's say I applied and went to the interview at Island Air, what is the anwser to moving on, I am sure they ask if you would leave or try to go to Hawaiian or Aloha?? Right?

thanks, if you all don't mind answering this.

just answer honestly...if you say you wouldn't leave island air to go to aloha, they would probably think you insane (as well as a big fat liar). just tell them how excited you are for the chance to fly for island air.

Man, that avatar just cracks me up!! LOLOL

Guam, why would you wanna leave ASA for Island Air anyway? I'm sure that'd be the question they'd ask you.

This looks like the writings of a violent alcoholic!

I interviewed at Island in 2001 and was asked my 5 yr goals, I just told them AQ or HA. They asked me to come to their next ground school.

They asked me where I saw myself in 1 year. I told them flying a Dash-8 around the islands with a bird of paradise on the tail. what about 5 years? Flying a 737 around the islands with a bird of paradise on the tail. A year later I am flying a Dash -8 around the Islands with a bird of paradise on the tail.

hugh, man you're good! great answer!!

i agree with the above, if you're gonna come to island air they would expect you would want to move up to aloha (i would think anyways). personally i wouldn't say hal, but then that's just me.

fyi, there isn't a direct flow through or anything between island air and aloha. but it does seem like if you don't make any enemies while you're at island you're gonna get a pretty good shot at aq. best of luck....

I don't think HAL is going to tank but just in case I sent AQ my resume 3 months ago...

Dunkerley told one of our pilots that if whoever is made the trustee follows the current game plan, all furloughs should be back by June 2004. Hope it's true, with the extended unemployment benefits I'm good to April 2004. A little substitue teaching to stretch the unemployment and I'll make it to June.

I'm currently trying to decide if I can afford to try and fly for CHQ or one of the other regionals that are hiring. (As a back-up in case HAL does tank - I need to start building that seniority.) Unemployment pays more!

I hope Hawaiian makes history and they become the first to make it with a trustee driving. Airlines like Mesa and Chautauqua re-define the saying "Hostile work environment" Scabs carrying on and Lorenzo-ists running the shops out there. stay away! Its evil.

I had to see my therapist every day for a week when i was finally done with Mesa. I have more sessions scheduled as soon as the next South Swell arrives but it will take time for me to forget the pain and suffering.

Freight Dog and all the rest that responded, THANKS!

I am at Comair actually, I spent most of my life growing up in Guam, learned to fly there and got my first job there in a cherokee Six flying between Tinian and Saipan, then later in the sweetest machine(SD3-60).

I thought I would go to the mainland and get some flying in, well i have had enough, I have always had enough, I have been trying HAL for along time and sent a resume to AQ years ago. I am upgrading in the RJ, then I want to do anything to live back in the islands, and Island Air is my avenue to get there.

So, that's why I would leave Comair for Island Air.
Well the real answer is Wahine, Good waves, and spam musubi. And Guava man, you can't get Guava on the east coast.

I like walking into ABC store and buying spam musubi and a can ice coffee wearing nothing but board shorts and slippas.

ps. I knew there wasn't any flow through, thanks!:)

Hey Island Hopper....How'd you hear about my title fight in LGB??? The rematch is on for June 16-19. Glad to see ya down here...

Hey Guam, I would say you need to re-submit that resume and try and find SOMEBODY at AQ that you know. I gave them a resume over a year ago with a rec and meanwhile pilots galore including mini me and freight dog passed me by in new hire classes when I was finally called one thing my friend told me was that they might have forgotten about me because I gave them my resume at the beginning of a hiring lull of 3 months.

As long as I am in. Junior bottom of the list matters me not. I got a seniority number and I will never let it go.

As for the guava nectar try some of the hispanic markets in the barrio while you're waiting. They love guava! Aloha.
