Dallas & Fort Worth Working On Wright Amendment

(CBS 11 News) DALLAS The mayors of Dallas and Fort Worth are working on a deal that could eliminate the Wright Amendment.

Dallas Mayor Laura Miller and Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief met for several hours Friday, working on such a plan.

The Wright Amendment is a federal law that restricts commercial flights at Dallas Love Field to a nine-state region. It was passed in 1979 to protect DFW Airport when the airport was new.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines wants the law repealed so it can fly to any airport in the United States. DFW Airport and Fort Worth’s American Airlines, which is based at DFW, want the law to remain in place.

A Dallas official close to the negotiations says the mayors have agreed to seek a nine-year phase-out of restrictions on long-haul flights and allow immediate through-ticketing at Love Field.

The official spoke today on condition of anonymity because of the stakes involved between the two airlines. The agreement would also reduce Love Field from 32 gates to 20 gates.

But the official said other details haven't been settled -- including whether Fort Worth-based American will be asked to leave Love Field.

But Dallas city councilman Ed Oakley said the city cannot ask American to leave Love. “We can’t ask them to leave. FAA rules (and) their leases would prohibit us from doing that. This will have to be voluntary among the three airlines that have the leaseholds, or there is no deal.”

A spokesman for Dallas Mayor Laura Miller said there was no deal yet and declined to comment further.

American Airlines issued a statement Friday saying, “We cannot imagine American moving out of Love Field under any circumstances, short of the Wright Amendment remaining fully in place. We don’t believe anyone should assume American would willingly move our operation and give up our best customers to Southwest.

Southwest Airlines had no comment on the situation Friday.

Not a done deal, thankfully. But pretty clear proof that SWA is worse than AA ever was, by a factor of ten. You can take that "Wright is wrong" battlecry and wipe your butt with it.

Any casual readers doubt my thesis on what SWA had done to Braniff? Next, if AA doesn't leave SWA will have the sheriff escort them off. That's the SWA "freemarket" for you.
