Apache, you're just one of those people who has a "niche mission" in life... that none of your peers agree with.

As I said before, there are always variations in people's personalities - you don't want cookie cutter employees or even friends. But when you go THIS far out of the established norm, alienate other professionals in the industry with your "ideas", and no one else seems to think the same way you do, I submit to you:

SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR WAY OF THINKING.

You're trying to tell us that the several HUNDRED pilots who will accept and benefit from this, as a way to improve their lives and get back into the workplace after an airline closure that was NOT their fault are ALL somehow cheats, liars, and useless to society, similar somehow to the people who abuse food stamps and unemployment on and off for their entire life?

No one's listening... except those of us trying to have a rational conversation with you in an attempt to figure out of it there is ANY sense to your diatribes.

Yes, taxes take care of MANY other things. That's why I'm not saying I should get ALL, or even a large percentage of them back should I become unemployed. We're talking 3-5% of someone's average FEDERAL taxes back, not including Social Security or State taxes.

It's a trade-off... spend $25,000-35,000 immediately for someone who becomes unemployed so that they can get a job making $50,000-$90,000 again, paying $12,000-30,000 in taxes just that first year, or let them stay unemployed and laid off as an airline pilot making $36,000 at Home Depot for 2-3 years until the economy recovers, and only generate $4,000 a year in taxes.

Pretty easy math.

And, yes, there are PLENTY of jobs that a fresh type rating will get you on the corporate side. You might have to go to some contract work for 6 months or so with ACASS or some others or take a right seat job for a year, even though you have 8,000 hours+ total time since you're new in type... but the jobs are out there. Trust me, I've been looking for jobs on bigger corporate equipment for 9 months. If I had a type rating in a CL300, CL604/605, GIV/V, or a Falcon 2000EASy, I'd be flying one right now...

The jobs are out there, not enough for 500+ people at one time, but certainly enough for 500 pilots over a 12-18 month time period.

Before Apache scalps himself, it needs to be clarified. This additional funds for training is for those that filed for UI in Indiana. That leaves out an overwhelming majority of the pilots at ATA.

On April 3, there was no pilot domicile in IN. I'm not sure how this money is even going to be distributed. It also applies to non-pilot employees.

I got this deal back in early 2005 when getting furloughed from ATA. It was a $5000 grant from the City of Chicago. Just enough to get a 737 Type, which was a great sim prep for my CAL interview. I would imagine there is a cap on the amount of funds which is in that ball-park.

Amerika has become the United Socialist States of Amerika (USSA). I'm not fighting it any more, I give up! I've paid well over $400,000 in taxes in just the last 20 years and I'm just tired of fighting the good fight.

I'll take your food stamps, unemployment and a free type rating while thinking of how to make money off of this Global Warming thing.

WhineLover, maybe we can just take the money and buy an Italian Ice truck and sell ice to the bikini clad ladies at FLL beach. They can keep their type ratings, I don't need it to fly a Cub on floats.

Can you say tool? I know who he is. It must be hard to live with yourself knowing that you are not only a weak pilot, but to also have a little d$*? is horrible.

WTF...more pilot cannibalism.

Should all of us who were thinking of staying in this industry turn around and go work at Wal-Mart so apache and his friends don't have to compete with us for jobs??

If I didn't have such a bad attitude, I would go walk in front of a train and thereby save him some oxygen and a place in the interview line...But thanks to my hard headedness, I ain't quitting aviation until after the last heavy jet is cut into tin cans...

Here's another angle on this.

Are we (in the USA) a government of the elite, by the elite, and for the elite? Or a government of the people, by the people, and for the people?

It seems to me that if the "laws of the land" allow the elite to operate billion dollar corporations irresponsibly, fail, and walk away with tons of wealth, then it is just to make it possible for the displaced to retrain and seek other gainful employment in their chosen profession.

If that's a problem, then it is perhaps time to remake the system...
